Background / History

Danzo was a student of Senju Tobirama and a longtime comrade of Hiruzen Sarutobi. He resented Tobirama’s decision to choose Hiruzen as Hokage, believing that he could have unified the shinobi world himself. After Minato’s death, he expected another opportunity to take office, only for Hiruzen to return from retirement 5 28 86.

As Root’s leader, Danzo handled covert matters for Hiruzen. Their collaboration included Wood Style experiments initially authorized by the Hokage; Hiruzen later ordered the research stopped because of its cruelty. Danzo’s involvement with Orochimaru’s secret experimentation nevertheless continued 28 165.

Years earlier, Danzo persuaded Hanzo to attack Yahiko’s original Akatsuki, portraying the organization as a threat to Hanzo’s rule. Their ambush forced Yahiko to take his own life and severely injured Nagato and Konan. Danzo sought the Land of Rain’s allegiance to Konoha in exchange for support, but Hanzo never honored that arrangement 77.

Personality

Danzo presents personal ambition as service to Konoha. He claims that eliminating rivals, controlling tailed beasts, and obtaining powerful bloodlines would protect the village, while repeatedly imagining himself as Hokage. Orochimaru exploits this ambition to secure his cooperation against Eiji 28 45 53.

His hatred of the Uchiha frequently overrides his normally restrained demeanor. Ryoma observes that anti-Uchiha operations excite him enough to remain awake for days. Danzo treats individual Uchiha wrongdoing as grounds to punish the entire clan and explicitly refuses to spare its children 5 31 73.

Despite his intimidating manner, he often retreats before stronger opposition. He backs down when Hiruzen asserts his authority and abandons his forces when confronted by Kakuzu. After escaping, he fabricates a heroic account of the battle to conceal his flight 6 55 56.

Targeting Eiji’s Contact with Naruto

Danzo’s first appearance establishes his hostility toward the Uchiha: learning that an Uchiha has approached the jinchuriki, he immediately orders the entire clan arrested. Ryoma reminds him that such an operation requires Hokage approval 4.

When Hiruzen refuses to surrender Eiji for interrogation, Danzo independently orders Ryoma to arrest him if he approaches Naruto again—and to kill him if he resists. Eiji subsequently kills six Root ninja while protecting Naruto. Danzo demands punishment, but Hiruzen closes the dispute 6 10.

Rumor Campaign and Loss of Office

Danzo conspires with Homura and Koharu to use public opinion against the Uchiha. He hopes to provoke the clan into attacking the Hokage Building, where waiting ninja could suppress them. His demands to interrogate Fugaku’s family intensify the pressure 19 20 21.

He then considers placing Ryoma’s death inside the Uchiha compound to obstruct the Security Division’s investigation. The Masked Man independently kills Ryoma and deposits his body there. Hiruzen suspects Danzo arranged the murder, but Danzo had not yet acted on his own plan 24 28.

The Security Division exposes Ryoma’s recruitment of rogue ninja for the rumor campaign. Hiruzen suspends Danzo as Root leader and Hokage Assistant for three months. Further records connected to Orochimaru lead Hiruzen to dismiss him from the assistant position outright 28 38 39.

Failed Kirigakure Trap and Flight from Kakuzu

Orochimaru persuades Danzo to help lure Eiji into Kirigakure through fabricated intelligence. Danzo agrees after Orochimaru warns that Eiji’s growth threatens his chances of becoming Hokage. The plan fails when Eiji’s team defeats the Mizukage and returns alive 45 54.

Danzo next seeks to exploit Yagura’s arrival in Konoha, but Hiruzen sends him to the border to keep him away from the negotiations. There, his forces encounter Kakuzu while cooperating with Orochimaru. Danzo orders an attack but flees as his subordinates are overwhelmed 53 55 56.

Returning through Konoha’s back gate, he is beaten by Uchiha guards who challenge him for a password. He later claims that his squad fought to protect the villagers, then orders witnesses silenced 56 57.

Shisui’s Eyes and Danzo’s Death

After Obito’s identity is exposed, Danzo uses his involvement in the Nine-Tails attack to renew demands for the Uchiha’s elimination. The escalating pressure contributes to the clan scheduling a coup 73 80.

Hiruzen tells Danzo about Shisui’s proposed use of Kotoamatsukami to change Fugaku’s will. Danzo instead attacks Shisui for his eyes, using Izanagi to counter his genjutsu. Eiji returns to Konoha and kills Danzo; the following chapter confirms that Danzo had only recently been reinstated before his death 80 81.

Exposure and Dismantling of Root

Eiji presents Danzo’s corpse, blind Sharingan, and transplanted Wood Style arm to Hiruzen. He then raids Root, removes its members’ seals, and sends the children gathered by Danzo to the orphanage with recovered embezzled funds 84 86.

The resulting dossier mixes genuine wrongdoing with fabrication. Eiji explicitly invents additional charges, including allegations concerning Sakumo’s suicide and Danzo’s role in the Nine-Tails attack. Homura and Koharu recognize some real offenses but find the account exaggerated; the dossier is not confirmation of every accusation it contains 86 87.

Root’s destruction also cuts off Orochimaru’s steady supply of funding and experimental subjects from Konoha 86.

Reanimation and Final Defeat

Orochimaru returns Danzo to the battlefield through Impure World Reincarnation. Danzo attacks Hiruzen with regenerating limbs, sword strikes, and sustained Wind Release, wearing down his former comrade before Orochimaru deploys the reanimated First and Second Hokages 97 98.

Hiruzen uses a shadow clone to seize Danzo and seals his soul with the Reaper Death Seal, ending his reanimated return 98.
