The Reactions of the Great Families

Speaking of the Xun Clan, practically everyone knew Xun Yu. After all, during the Three Kingdoms era, Xun Yu had been the most famous member of the Xun Clan, a Talent of a King's Aide. Cao Cao had called him "my Zifang," and of course, his personal abilities had more than lived up to his reputation.

Xun Yue, courtesy name Zhong Yu, had been a historian, political commentator, thinker, and famous scholar of the Eastern Han Dynasty. He was the grandson of the renowned scholar Xun Shu, the nephew of Minister of Works Xun Shuang, and the son of Xun Jian, the foremost of the Xun Clan's Eight Dragons.

Historically, during the reign of Emperor Ling of Han, eunuchs had held supreme power. Xun Yue had withdrawn from society and refused to serve. During Emperor Xian's reign, he answered Cao Cao's summons and was appointed Palace Attendant at the Yellow Gates. He was repeatedly promoted until he became Supervisor of the Palace Library and Palace Attendant.

The Zuo Zhuan spoke of the Three Immortalities: "The highest is establishing virtue, the next is establishing merit, and the next is establishing one's words. Though time passes, they are never discarded. This is called immortality."

Throughout his life, Xun Yue had written books and established theories. He had written thirty chapters of the Annals of Han and five chapters of the Shen Jian. In addition, there were several dozen other works, including Chong De, Zheng Lun, and Collected Works of Chamberlain of the Palace Xun.
