Background / History

Gan Ning was the legitimate son of the Gan family of Linjiang, Ba Commandery. He left home while young because he wanted his own accomplishments to define him before his family background did. His later story that financial hardship led him into theft is presented as his own account, but he refused to return home after leaving because of his pride. 740 752 996

At fifteen, Gan Ning had already conquered the Daba Mountains. He taught the mountain barbarians a single Han Chinese surrender phrase—“Great Lord Gan, spare me!”—so they could save themselves when facing him. 990

Liu Bei's invitation gave Gan Ning an opportunity to turn his river-pirate force into a path toward official achievement. During the voyage, he sparred with Huang Zhong, fought Guan Cheng's pirate fleet, and reached Taixiang, where Wang Xuan's shipyard convinced him of the future potential of large-scale naval warfare.
