Electric lights had already formed their own chain of interests. Unlike gas, however, half of the electric light shareholders were military personnel, so in the political arena, the Gas Association held greater influence.

Many members of the Gas Association scoffed at electric lights and searched everywhere for their flaws.

Their vision extended only as far as their own interests being infringed upon and protecting those interests.

That was why they found electric lights displeasing in every possible way and tried every means to create scandals for "Earl's Light," using them as ammunition.

Yet the old hands in Parliament could basically see through it. The Gas Association's attack was merely an attempt by the interest groups behind them to claim a share of the electric lighting market.

After all, in terms of brightness alone, gas lamps had no chance of winning! Interest groups had no sentiments; all they saw was profit.

The Gas Association would launch the attack from the front. As long as they forced Hobart to the negotiating table, representatives of the interest groups would immediately appear and gain entry into the electric lighting industry by selling out the Gas Association.

It was an old tactic, but a very effective one.

The investigation team had originally been quite happy to see Hobart arrive. It meant that Hobart had finally compromised and that their efforts had finally borne fruit.

But what did Hobart mean by saying he wanted to stop selling electric lights? Was he backing down already?

That should not have been the case. Both Duke Christine and Earl Hall held high political status among the nobility. With their mediation, "Earl's Light" might suffer some losses now, but it would surely enjoy better development in the future!
