Background
Klein presided over the Tarot Club from Above the Gray Fog as Mr. Fool. When Hobart showed signs of madness connected to the Country of Disorder, Klein examined him with Spirit Vision, determined that he was not a Beyonder, and drew him into the gathering under the codename Emperor. 2
In Tingen, Ince Zangwill unexpectedly killed Klein. He later returned from death; by the time Hobart waited at his grave, the two had come to know each other's most consequential secrets—Klein's resurrection and Hobart's connection to the Creator. 150 175
Klein was a transmigrator. Hobart recognized both that fact and Klein's identity from their first meeting, although Klein did not learn this until after becoming a god. 613 753
Appearance
Klein is a black-haired, brown-eyed young man with a scholarly air in his usual appearance. 543
- As Gehrman Sparrow, he presents himself as a formally dressed, cold-eyed gentleman whose expression conceals barely restrained madness. 677
- He has used disguises, including a bearded, bespectacled appearance at the Rosell Memorial Exhibition. 252
- He later disguised himself as Hobart's former servant, Richardson, when visiting Hobart. 747
Personality
Klein is cautious with unknown powers and dangerous knowledge. When Hobart supplied a forged treatment involving the Creator's Honorific Name, Klein memorized it but refused to use it immediately; he later warned his colleagues about the associated danger. 54 56
As Mr. Fool, he carefully maintains an aloof divine façade, even while internally struggling to control situations beyond his preparation. 345 He is also pragmatic and adaptable, taking bounty work when money is needed and using transactions, disguises, rituals, and prepared items to address threats. 252 531
Despite claiming to have no friends during his time as Gehrman Sparrow, Klein repeatedly demonstrates deep loyalty. He works with Hobart against Ince Zangwill and Amon, refuses to disrupt Dunn and Daly's new lives, and later seeks familiar people and places to preserve his humanity. 488 590 592 747
