Background / History

Shiryu served as Impel Down's Chief Guard, where he indulged his compulsion to slaughter prisoners. His killings were severe enough that Magellan imprisoned him in Level 6 of Infinite Hell. During the prison crisis, Magellan released him as temporary support while intending to confine him again afterward, giving Shiryu a decisive reason to betray Impel Down. 520

After emerging from Impel Down, Shiryu encountered Oboro. Rather than fight, he sought a deal; Oboro immediately accepted him into the Hell Pirates. Oboro offered Magellan's death as a welcome gift, while implicitly establishing that the captain's will would be absolute aboard the crew. Shiryu accepted this arrangement. 520

Following Magellan's death, Shiryu was tasked with killing every remaining Impel Down administrator, particularly Deputy Warden Hannyabal. He completed the assignment and later returned after killing Hannyabal and gathering escaped prisoners. 526 529

At the Hell Pirates' first formal executive meeting, Oboro appointed Shiryu captain of the Second Division. He subsequently received divine power and Shiki's inheritance, greatly increasing his physical abilities, swordsmanship, Haki, combat experience, and killing intent. 532 533 534

Shiryu is a man over three meters tall who commonly wears a warden's uniform beneath a white cloak and keeps a cigar in his mouth. 520

Shiryu is addicted to killing and derives pleasure from it. Unlike indiscriminate killers, he is described as having a particular focus in his bloodlust, though he ultimately regards the method of killing as irrelevant so long as he gets to kill. 400 586

He is arrogant, provocative, and contemptuous of weakness. He challenged Crocodile's standing soon after joining the Hell Pirates, believing a stronger member could replace the vice-captain without angering Oboro. 529 He later states outright that the weak should die and that weakness is the original sin. 623

Despite his hostility, Shiryu recognizes power and accepts Oboro's authority because it fits his idea of a true pirate and sea powerhouse. 520 He can also assess opponents calmly in battle, identifying Ben Beckman's intellect and Observation Haki as especially troublesome. 547 551
