They Call Me Mewtwo
As the largest Pokémon academy in the Hoenn Region, Canalave Pokémon Academy naturally offered an extremely rich curriculum. Besides the Battle Department's regular wilderness expeditions, spring and autumn excursions were held almost every year.
This was meant both to enrich the students' extracurricular lives and strengthen their practical combat abilities.
The "Academic School" and the "Traveler School" had always been one of the Pokémon League's greatest problems and headaches.
The Academic School looked down on the Traveler School, believing they were merely a bunch of reckless brutes who set off traveling alone without much theoretical foundation, which was also a major reason why Trainer mortality rates remained so high.
The Traveler School likewise looked down on the Academic School, believing they were stuffed full of theory but lacked real combat experience. They could handle battles and competitions well enough, but if they truly encountered danger in the wild, they would have no idea what to do.
The academy's wilderness expeditions and spring and autumn excursions were, to some extent, meant to make up for this weakness among the students.
Originally, none of this had much to do with Jing He.
But this time, his name had appeared on the list of teachers accompanying the Autumn Excursion.
More importantly, the class he would be accompanying was actually Battle Department First-Year Class One! Of course, he would not be the only teacher. The main person in charge was a Battle Department instructor named Du Fu, and besides Jing He, two other teachers would be coming along.
But the issue lay with those two accompanying teachers.
One was Ayako, a Breeding Department instructor who got along fairly well with Jing He.
And the other... was A Quan, an Oceanic Airflow Studies instructor!
Although Jing He still did not know whether A Quan had joined Team Aqua, or whether she had already joined them but Team Aqua's plans had yet to make any moves, seeing that name felt like a constant reminder to him—Hoenn would not remain peaceful, and neither would the entire League.
This left Jing He, who had only wanted to quietly be a teacher, perhaps earn the title of researcher or professor if he got lucky, catch a few Pokémon, and try to become an ordinary Trainer, feeling utterly helpless.
It would have been one thing if he did not know what would happen in the future.
But the problem was that he knew perfectly well.
In the near future, Team Aqua and Team Magma would turn the Hoenn Region upside down.
The legendary Super Ancient Legendary Pokémon would awaken! When that time came, if he were merely an ordinary person, or even an ordinary Trainer, his own safety would be completely beyond his control.
Yes, the future Steven Stone would indeed hold up the sky for Hoenn.
But was he really supposed to place all his hopes on Steven Stone single-handedly battling those two terrifying monsters, Bighead Carp and Won't Fly, for twenty-two days?
Twenty-two days!
Looking further ahead, there would be the disasters caused by Team Aqua and Team Magma. Closer at hand, the remnants of Greater Mauville Holdings would not stay quiet either.
And he could not simply run off to another region.
Never mind what would happen to his job if he left; the problems that would arise in other regions in the future were no less serious than those in Hoenn.
When all was said and done...
If he wanted to protect himself, he first needed enough strength, didn't he? "Sigh—"
Jing He let out a long sigh.
The tension that had relaxed after he fooled Da Hui earlier was once again drawn tight.
"Koujie?"
Gastly looked at Jing He curiously.
Wasn't the Autumn Excursion a good thing? They could even soak in hot springs. Why had he become so strange after seeing that sheet of paper?
"Come on. Time to train."
Jing He took a big gulp of coffee and pulled himself together. "Yesterday, there were still some problems with the timing of your Will-O-Wisp."
"Koujie—"
Gastly slipped into Jing He's clothes.
For once, it showed no resistance to training.
That afternoon.
After settling lunch simply in the school cafeteria, Jing He brought Gastly back to the counseling room, intending to take a nap before continuing their afternoon training.
Pokémon were neither machines nor tools. Excessive training would only backfire. Jing He was not so irrational that he did not understand the importance of balancing work and rest.
"Koujie~~"
Since Jing He needed the computer, Gastly grinned and asked for his phone instead. Its tongue swiped across the screen as it prepared to finish watching Gengar's Adventures, which it had not finished earlier.
A Diantha photo collection? Not Cynthia Swimsuit Show? No... huh? How had so many strange video recommendations appeared on the phone after just a few days? Trash website!
Pah! On the other side.
Jing He propped up his head with one hand and controlled the mouse with the other, preparing to look up the requirements for becoming a League Registered Trainer.
"A massive explosion occurred on an unnamed island in the Kanto Region's waters. No casualties have been reported. The cause is still under investigation."
"The Unova Region announces the Royal Unova construction project, intending to build the world's largest luxury cruise ship."
After briefly browsing several current events, he clicked into the Trainer page.
The League's requirements for Registered Trainers were neither particularly high nor particularly low.
As long as one had a recommendation from sufficiently qualified League personnel, they could register directly. However, if they needed a starter Pokémon, they would have to pay a considerable fee. This option was mainly aimed at Trainers with some family background.
But the requirements were not low, either.
For Trainers from more ordinary families, they needed to pay a certain fee and pass several assessments before they could obtain Trainer qualifications.
Not only was the fee expensive, but the assessments were said to be extremely difficult. There were written tests, battles, even psychological evaluations, and more.
If they failed the assessments, the fee would not be refunded.
This could stop many Trainers who acted on impulse, while also reducing the Pokémon Association's workload.
"Beep beep!"
As Jing He browsed, his chat channel, which had been inactive for a long time, began flashing.
When he opened it, he found, unsurprisingly, that it was the user called "Who Am I."
The other party had not contacted him for so long that Jing He thought he had already fooled them last time. He had not expected them to come online again.
This time.
Jing He already knew in advance that the other party was a Pokémon.
If he had previously been surprised by a Pokémon seeking psychological counseling on its own, now he no longer found it strange.
Just look—his Gastly was currently sprawled across a single sofa, watching shows.
But the first question the other party threw at him this time stumped Jing He.
"Who am I?"
Jing He glanced at the other party's username, and the corner of his mouth twitched.
Who you are is something you should ask yourself, isn't it? Just as he was about to type, another message popped up.
"Who exactly am I?!"
Had it gone crazy?
Jing He's raised hand paused.
He decided to wait first.
Given the state the other party was currently displaying, they probably would not need him to ask before revealing the reason themselves.
Sure enough, his thought was quickly proven right.
"Who is it? Why does it always appear in my mind? What exactly is my relationship with it?"
It? Split personality?
Jing He lightly rubbed his chin twice, instantly becoming interested.
Pokémon with dissociative identity disorder were relatively rare. This was also the first time he had encountered such a case.
After a brief moment of thought, and confirming that the other party had nothing more to say, Jing He finally began typing.
"First, I need to determine what kind of Pokémon you are. Second, if possible, you should describe the 'it' that you 'see.'"
After typing that, Jing He folded his hands together, his eyes flickering faintly.
This time, the other party kept him waiting a little longer. But Jing He was not in a hurry and waited patiently.
"Beep beep—"
When he saw the contents of the chat window, the previously calm Jing He sprang from his chair with a crash.
A single line appeared in the chat window.
"They call me... Mewtwo."
