The Murk Still Lurked Deep

"The Convergence Zone..."

Wu Mian warned him gravely, "Chairman, the Government Affairs Hall couldn't have moved against us without the garrison's cooperation. The nearest passage to the Convergence Zone may be blocked. Even if we reach the other side, the garrison may come after us."

"It will certainly be blocked."

Chairman Quan walked toward the end of the passage. "But there's a Rift in this building that leads to the Convergence Zone. We can escape through it."

Almost no one on the Municipal Council knew the Rift existed, so there could be no troops waiting at its far end. It would also allow only one crossing. Once they reached the Convergence Zone, they would not have to fear anyone following them through.

The garrison there would still search for them. But both the Fusion and Intensive Cultivation factions held some influence in the Convergence Zone. As chairman, he still had value, and their people would surely find a way to protect him.

His words gave everyone hope of escape, and they hurried after him down the passage.

Supported by his External Implant Body, Chairman Quan moved swiftly. After a little over half a minute, a corner appeared ahead. Beyond it lay the Rift. Just then, Wu Mian, running beside him, sensed something and immediately thrust out an arm to stop him.

Before anyone understood why, a thunderous crash sounded ahead. The wall burst apart, spraying dust and fragments across the floor.

Light streamed in through the breach, revealing a middle-aged man in an Investigation Supervisor's uniform. He looked down the passage and said, "Chairman Quan, you won't escape. Stay here and keep what dignity you can."

"Xu Chan?"

The eyes of Wu Mian's External Implant Body narrowed. "Stop him!"

Every security guard raised his gun. Shots roared through the passage
