History

Disappearance of Taiyi Mountain

Taiyi Mountain's main peak disappeared under a dense fog in full daylight. Farmers reportedly witnessed the event, while Changling residents speculated that an immortal sect had either appeared or returned to seclusion 6.

Cloth Shop Ghost Disaster

A fierce ghost set a cloth shop ablaze with yin fire, provoking panic among onlookers and driving residents from the area. Lin Tianlu entered the flames unharmed, defeated the entity, and rescued the unconscious shopkeeper and servant. By the following morning, the incident had become a major topic throughout the county 13 14.

Cheng Manor Incident

Reports of sinister laughter and chopping noises at Cheng Manor drew Lin Tianlu and Hua Shuya into an investigation. Cheng Yishi had deliberately spread the rumors to expose her father, Cheng Yanghua, and her ghostly sister, Cheng Xinyin, both of whom had committed grave crimes 21 27.

Cheng Yanghua was killed by Hua Shuya, while Cheng Xinyin was slain by Cheng Yishi. The sudden deaths of the prominent Cheng patriarch and his younger daughter caused considerable unrest, though the family suppressed the ghost-related details 25 27 30.

Thundercloud Crisis

A massive formation of purple-black thunderclouds gathered above Changling County, prompting Magistrate Tang to order an evacuation. The heavenly lightning halted in mid-air, changed direction, and struck Lin Tianlu's courtyard instead; the clouds dispersed shortly afterward 37 38.

The event left residents shaken and generated further rumors that either a great demon had appeared or an immortal had ascended 38 40.

Growing Supernatural Unrest

By the time of the thundercloud crisis, residents were reporting a bloodthirsty killer targeting women in villages near the county. The unresolved case was linked in rumor to the earlier death of Li Manor's concubine 40.

Hua Shuya later traced the county's bandit threat to Li Manor, where she discovered murdered and mutilated women, possessed residents, and multiple ghosts 45 46.
