Overnight, Umbridge discovered that she had suddenly turned into a toad and nearly went mad because of it. Her temper became even more irritable and volatile, and Madam Pomfrey had no choice but to give her large amounts of calming draughts to keep Umbridge from completely breaking down over her appearance.
What troubled Madam Pomfrey even more, however, was that she not only had to make time to comfort the loathsome toad, but also deal with the overly curious students.
After word spread that Umbridge had turned into a toad, students came in groups to use Skiving Snackboxes provided by the Weasley Twins to send themselves to the School Hospital for treatment, all for a glimpse of the toad's true appearance.
Madam Pomfrey had no choice but to take out curtains and hang them around Umbridge's hospital bed, preventing others from seeing what the toad looked like so that she would not lose control from unbearable shame. However, it did little good, because curtains could not block out people's voices, much less students who loved courting death.
More than once, Madam Pomfrey suggested that Umbridge go to St. Mungo's Hospital for Magical Maladies and Injuries for more proper treatment, but Umbridge refused. She did not want anyone else to know what she had become.
Umbridge knew very well that if she appeared at St. Mungo's Hospital for Magical Maladies and Injuries looking like this, she would be on the front page of the newspapers the next day.
She would never allow that to happen.
However, Umbridge did not know that some unscrupulous fellow had long since photographed her toad form and was preparing to publish it in a magazine.
On the third day after Umbridge turned into a toad, Minister of Magic Fudge personally came to Hogwarts to visit her.
