Quirinus Quirrell's Story
Winter is receding from Devon in March. Temperatures are rising, snow is melting, and tender shoots are sprouting on the muddy ground, bringing new life to the earth.
A young man wearing a trench coat appeared out of nowhere, stomping the newly sprouted tooth back into the soil, and slowly walked toward the house not far away.
With a creaking sound, the door to the house was pushed open.
"Looks like I'll need to get it fixed sometime," the young man muttered. He went straight to the kitchen, hung his damp trench coat on the hanger by the fireplace, and pulled his wand from his pocket to relight the fire.
A small black Little Snake slithered out of the young man's trench coat pocket and came to the fireplace to warm itself.
It wasn't time for the snakes to wake up from hibernation yet, but the young man didn't have a good solution, as he preferred to possess a snake rather than a rat.
The young man's name is Quirinus Quirrell. He recently returned to Britain from a world tour and is currently preparing to apply for a position as Defence Against the Dark Arts Professor at Hogwarts.
This time, Quirrell didn't come back alone; he had someone with him.
Or rather, a snake.
Possessing the Little Snake, he had many names: the one whose name cannot even be mentioned, the Dark Lord, or... Voldemort.
Yes, the infamous Voldemort.
Of course, to show his subservience, Quirrell always called him master, which is how Death Eater address the Dark Lord.
Although Quirrell never really liked the title, he needed to appear respectful, at least outwardly so.
At this moment, Quirrell is working hard to learn more magical skills from Voldemort so that he will never become a laughingstock again.
He sat in an armchair, gazing at the firelight in the fireplace, and took a large gulp of black tea. The flames danced in his eyes, mirroring his current emotions.
Everything is different now.
Once upon a time, Quirrell was a very weak student at Hogwarts. He was often mocked and teased by his classmates. He was tired of being that way and vowed to change everything.
Shortly after graduation, Quirrell hoped to become the Defence Against the Dark Arts Professor. He knew many people were afraid of the profession because of the rumored curse, but Quirrell felt it was nonsense and believed he could overcome the so-called curse and impress everyone.
However, Dumbledore did not immediately accept Quirrell's job offer. Instead, he suggested that Quirrell travel the world to broaden his horizons and then come to him when he returned.
Over the years of traveling the world, Quirrell gradually developed an interest in Dark Magic. Of course, this was limited to the theoretical aspects, but he soon realized how ridiculous theoretical Dark Magic was, just as ridiculous as his past fantasies of becoming a fearsome Dark wizard.
Finally, Quirrell began to fantasize that he could track down Voldemort and even learn more magical skills from him.
He changed his travel plans and went to the Albanian Forest, where Voldemort was said to be hiding, but no one knows if that's true.
However, to Quirrell's surprise, he actually encountered Voldemort legendary Voldemort, who was currently forced to live on the bodies of small rodents and was quite weak.
To Quirrell, this was utterly ridiculous. He also realized that his fantasy might come true. When Voldemort tried to persuade him to join the forces of darkness, Quirrell expressed his desire to learn more magical skills from Voldemort, and in exchange, he would help Voldemort restore his body.
As expected, Voldemort agreed to the deal.
This made Quirrell complacent, thinking that the legendary Dark Lord was nothing special and that he was capable of controlling Voldemort.
If he could learn the other's superb magical skills, he was certain he could become a powerful wizard worthy of admiration, no longer as insignificant as many others. He was tired of mediocrity, tired of being looked down upon and ridiculed; he wanted to become someone everyone looked up to, like Dumbledore and Voldemort.
As for Voldemort, this down-on-his-luck Dark Lord, by then he would be nothing more than a bargaining chip that could be discarded at will, and he could even hand him over to Dumbledore.
During his travels, Voldemort did teach him a great deal of magical skill, but Quirrell sadly found that he could only master a small portion of it, though it was enough to make him a highly skilled wizard.
Voldemort stayed with him throughout their subsequent world tour.
The two would occasionally chat about various things. Although Quirrell disregarded most of Voldemort's words, he had to admit that some of the other man's statements were indeed true.
There is no such thing as good or evil, right or wrong in the world. He was called the Dark Lord by the world simply because he used violent means in the process of fighting for power.
Voldemort never thought he had done anything wrong. He believed that people without power or influence were simply incompetent, and incompetence was a sin.
Quirrell understood this perfectly.
When Voldemort promised to take control of the Ministry of Magic, he would leave Quirrell a proper position as a reward for helping him regain his physical body.
At that moment, Quirrell was tempted. If Voldemort were his protector, everything would be different.
From then on, Quirrell began to accept Voldemort's guidance and carry out his orders. Undeniably, Quirrell benefited greatly from the Dark wizard's methods.
Voldemort also told Quirrell many secrets, including that the legendary alchemist Nicolas Flamel was still alive, and the existence of the Philosopher's Stone, which could grant immortality.
He told Quirrell that he needed the stone to ensure immortality, and Quirrell would receive a large amount of gold as a reward.
With Voldemort's help, Quirrell spent a great deal of time finally finding Nicolas Flamel's residence in Paris, France. However, Flamel seemed to have noticed their spying and remained hidden in Safe House, preventing them from succeeding.
Soon, Dumbledore arrived, and Quirrell dared not show himself, instead using Muggle to monitor Nicholas's residence while remaining hidden in the background.
However, something else happened that frustrated Quirrell: Nicolas Flamel disappeared without warning with Dumbledore's help.
Quirrell and Voldemort went to great lengths to find the clues again. Nicolas Flamel had settled in Devon, but his residence was protected by the Fidelius Charm, making it impossible for them to find him. The Secret-Keeper was Dumbledore.
Quirrell has been keeping an eye on Nicolas Flamel's house for a long time and occasionally sees Dumbledore visiting him.
The other party has also discovered his presence, but they cannot determine who he is.
While Quirrell and Voldemort were considering how to obtain the Philosopher's Stone, the situation changed again, as it was rumored that the Philosopher's Stone might be hidden in Gringotts.
This was the result of his interrogation of a Goblin.
Stealing the Philosopher's Stone from Gringotts is no easy task, and Quirrell needs to confirm the news, as Dumbledore already knows someone is eyeing the Philosopher's Stone and may be setting a trap for him.
Moreover, Gringotts is heavily guarded, and almost no wizard can steal anything from Gringotts and escape unscathed.
Quirrell sadly discovered that he did not have that ability, and Voldemort seemed to think so too, trying to train him to be a qualified helper.
