Background / History

Fang Che awakened after death in the body of a seventeen-year-old martial apprentice six hundred years after his remembered lifetime. Although he retained fragments of past-life experiences, he could not remember his former identity and accepted the rebirth almost immediately. The body’s original owner was a collateral Fang Clan youth raised in Azure Wave City through his mother’s family. 2

Soon after awakening, Fang Che identified a Five Elements Spirit Gu in his Dantian. He traced it to a Qi and Blood Pill given by Su Yue, his supposed best friend, and recognized that Su Yue had used the Gu to kill the original Fang Che. Fang Che deceived Su Yue with false treasure information, later exterminated the Su Family, and acquired resources that dramatically improved his aptitude. 2 6

He inherited the Limitless True Scripture and manuals for blade, spear, sword, and halberd from a jade pendant within the token accompanying his rebirth. The inheritance gave him the foundation for his unusual multi-weapon path, though he eventually chose the spear as his principal weapon and the halberd as a secondary destined weapon. 3 61 62

After entering White Cloud Martial Academy, Fang Che became entangled with the One Heart Sect through Sun Yuan and Yin Shen Gong. He received the codename Night Demon and cultivated a reputation as a ruthless sect disciple while simultaneously building status within the Guardian Hall as Fang Che. 16 56 225

Fang Che is calculating, adaptable, and exceptionally careful about maintaining appearances. He can perform humility, civility, arrogance, or ruthlessness as circumstances demand, frequently using words to unsettle opponents before fighting them. His self-description as “taciturn” becomes an ongoing joke because of his sharp tongue and talent for provoking others. 37 57

He is willing to employ deception, intimidation, and extreme violence against enemies, particularly sect members, corrupt officials, and those who prey on ordinary people. He deliberately embraces the public image of a “Devil” when it gives him freedom to act against threats. 232 508

Despite this brutality, Fang Che is protective of civilians, comrades, and the families of fallen Guardians. He compensates civilians harmed in battle, provides for the families of sacrificed Wardens, and retains deep guilt after being coerced into killing his own subordinates. 273 332 842

His greatest internal conflict comes from his divided identity. Fang Che values the people and mentors who trust him, yet must preserve Night Demon’s standing within the One Heart Sect and Sole True Sect.
