Twin Birth Speed, Like Cheating
That afternoon, Xue Jing watched as Twin Life on the panel began glowing with a pale golden light again. After running a few more tests, he reached a conclusion.
"The usage time is around twenty seconds. After it's fully used up, recovering to a full twenty-second cooldown takes about six hours..."
"The cooldown recovers continuously. Assuming I use one second of Twin Birth Speed and have nineteen seconds left, one-twentieth of six hours is eighteen minutes. That means after eighteen minutes, I'll be back to the full twenty seconds of usage time."
Xue Jing had worked out the detailed usage data.
It couldn't be helped. Lv1 Twin Life's usage time was simply too short, so he had to budget it carefully.
"Come to think of it, practicing the Hibernating Dragon Art also counts as an 'action,' so Twin Birth Speed can accelerate it too."
"That would directly double its efficiency... but the duration is still too short for now. I'll worry about it later."
At three in the afternoon, Xue Jing still hadn't gone to school. He had taken the entire day off.
He took the bus to the Hidden Dragon Dojo. Perhaps the afternoon shift had changed over, because the person at the front desk was no longer the Cheongsam Girl from before, but another beautiful receptionist in a cheongsam.
Though she had never met Xue Jing, she seemed to have been informed beforehand and shown his photo. The moment she saw him, she stood up and sweetly called out, "Jing Ye," leaving Xue Jing with a strange feeling.
This title doesn't seem much better than "young master."
After entering the dojo, Xue Jing first went to take a look at the training hall.
"No, no. Your method of exerting force is far too rigid. We martial artists have an old saying: 'Train up a thousand pounds of strength, use it with four ounces of skill.' You're only using your muscles to exert force. That's dead strength—it takes effort, yet it doesn't produce much effect..."
At the center of the training hall, Zhu Shan Ying was instructing an ordinary disciple, while quite a few others watched from around them.
Yet the instant Xue Jing entered the training hall, Zhu Shan Ying inexplicably turned toward the entrance. Her lively eyes, like those of a newborn beast, immediately lit up. She waved at him and happily called, "Hey, hey! Junior Brother, over here! Come quickly!"
Xue Jing paused slightly. Unable to refuse, he walked toward the center of the hall.
"Is he the Old Dojo Master's newly accepted Personal Disciple, Junior Brother?"
"He's so handsome. He's much better-looking than Chen Shixiong..."
"I heard he defeated Zhu Senior Sister, and the Old Dojo Master was so astonished by his talent that he immediately bowed and accepted him?"
"Who did you hear that from? What nonsense. Zhu Senior Sister was careless at the time—she didn't dodge..."
Many disciples who had not come to train that day and had therefore never seen Xue Jing turned curious gazes toward this new Junior Brother.
"Junior Brother, you came at just the right time. Let's spar and show them the proper way to use strength."
Zhu Shan Ying spoke with a radiant smile, took Xue Jing's hand, and led him toward the nearby ring.
The girl's little hand was soft and smooth, nothing like that of someone who practiced martial arts. Any man with a less resolute will might have had his soul pulled away by that hand, but Xue Jing remained rooted where he stood.
Zhu Shan Ying failed to pull him along and looked at Xue Jing in confusion.
"Um... how about we forget it? My skills are still lacking. I'm afraid it wouldn't be much of a teaching demonstration."
Xue Jing considered his words before speaking.
Zhu Shan Ying shot him a reproachful look. "Didn't you defeat me before? How can you say your skills are lacking? Come on, Senior Sister will go easy on you. It won't hurt at all..."
Xue Jing gave nothing away, but he could already tell that Zhu Shan Ying still wanted to salvage some pride.
After thinking it over, he nodded and agreed.
Zhu Shan Ying was immediately delighted. She pulled Xue Jing onto the ring, and that overly intimate gesture shattered the hearts of countless male disciples.
"Hey, who do you think will win?"
"Is that even a question? Zhu Senior Sister was obviously just careless last time. Junior Brother has only just started practicing martial arts—how could he possibly win?"
"Sigh, I just hope Zhu Senior Sister goes easy on him. Don't hurt our Junior Brother."
"Damn it, I can't possibly guess wrong this time, right? I'll bet fifty cents on Zhu Senior Sister to win!"
The watching disciples were all excited.
On the ring, the two stood facing each other.
"Junior Brother, be careful."
Zhu Shan Ying lowered her stance slightly and spread her hands into a fighting posture, reminding Xue Jing.
Xue Jing nodded and copied Zhu Shan Ying's stance. But he had never practiced this before, and even the ordinary disciples watching could tell that he was a complete amateur when it came to fighting technique.
But Zhu Shan Ying had personally experienced how formidable this Junior Brother was. She did not underestimate him, and a trace of focus appeared in her beautiful eyes.
However... in the next instant, her entire body suddenly tilted, and she fell to the right.
"Huh?"
Xue Jing had abruptly crouched down at an unbelievable speed, sweeping low with his right leg and knocking both her feet off the ground, sending her tumbling sideways.
It had happened too suddenly. Based on past experience, Zhu Shan Ying had focused her attention on the upper body at the start, because no opponent would open with a low sweep that had such a long windup.
...Unless the opponent was exceptionally fast. Then naturally, they could attack without restraint.
Having suffered another major loss due to insufficient information, Zhu Shan Ying remained calm despite her shock. She was about to brace herself against the ground and recover her balance.
Yet in that brief gap while she was suspended in the air with nowhere to borrow force from, Xue Jing had already seized her wrist at an absurd speed...
Bang!
Zhu Shan Ying lay sprawled on the ring, wearing a bewildered expression as though she had no idea what had just happened.
Another shoulder throw, and the same result.
This time, the girl had used strength to defend herself in advance, so she had not been knocked unconscious.
But that made no difference to her... This was only a spar, not a fight to the death. She had already lost.
The discussions among the surrounding disciples came to an abrupt halt, and the area fell silent.
"I concede, Zhu Senior Sister."
Xue Jing looked at the dazed girl lying on the ground and spoke softly.
Then he turned and stepped down from the ring, walking unhurriedly toward the training hall entrance.
Everywhere Xue Jing passed, the disciples instinctively moved aside, as though an invisible wall of air surrounded him, pushing everything away.
Only after Xue Jing had left the training hall did the disciples gradually come back to their senses and look at Zhu Shan Ying, who was still lying on the ring.
"Zhu... Zhu Senior Sister..." one disciple hesitantly called out.
The girl did not respond, staring blankly at the ceiling.
Xue Jing made his way to his cultivation room. He sat cross-legged in the middle of the hardwood floor and opened the panel for a look.
The pale golden glow emitted by Twin Life had dimmed slightly.
His spar with Zhu Shan Ying had used a little over three seconds of Twin Birth Speed.
It was the first time he had used this skill in actual combat, and the effect was just as Xue Jing had imagined—perhaps even beyond what he had imagined.
It's fucking insane! Forget the speed of the skill itself; that suddenness that defies common sense is the truly terrifying part.
Zhu Shan Ying had fought him once before and knew his attack speed. She had mentally prepared for it in advance, yet she had no room at all to react when his speed suddenly surged.
As long as he could make good use of that immense disparity in speed, the advantage it brought would be enormous.
Anyone who had played games knew just how infuriating this kind of fast-slow mix-up was.

"Hm? It doesn't count as defeating someone stronger anymore?"
Xue Jing raised an eyebrow.
The last time he had defeated Zhu Shan Ying, the panel had still judged it as defeating someone stronger. Now, it did not.
It seemed the panel had decided that, once Twin Birth Speed was activated, he was no longer weaker than Zhu Shan Ying?
