Background / History
Merchant heir
Bernard entered the Roldan Merchant Guild’s business at sixteen. Within a year, he tripled trade volume between Athkatla and Baldur’s Gate and doubled its profits through cooperation with the Caravan Alliance. By twenty-five, he independently managed trade extending to Waterdeep, Neverwinter, and Luskan. His profit-first approach included dealing in illegal goods and cultivating criminal trading partners when useful 24.
His voyage to Caledon was intended to secure a long-term smuggling arrangement with the local Thieves’ Guild, protecting one of the guild’s most profitable routes 24.
Harlett’s ambush
Captain Bloodhand Harlett’s pirates pursued Bernard’s ship across the Sea of Swords. Believing Harlett might be targeting him rather than the cargo, Bernard accepted Captain Bas’s plan to flee by small boat when the vessel ran aground 18.
When the lifeboats proved insufficient for the crew, Bernard pressured Bas into secretly escaping with him, the first mate, and the boatswain. The remaining sailors were abandoned to Harlett’s boarding force, permanently destroying their trust in Bernard and the officers 18 32.
After Harlett’s capture, Bernard learned that a family member had allegedly arranged the attack and promised the pirates sixty percent of the guild’s annual profits and use of its shipping network for smuggling 30.
Partnership with Soth
Bernard recognized that Soth required money and proposed a partnership rather than a bodyguard contract. He offered to manage Soth’s ransom funds through trade, promised at least fourfold returns, and pledged a twenty-percent share of the merchant guild if Soth helped him reclaim it 32.
He committed a third of the profit from selling the captured ship and cargo before Soth had even accepted the proposal, treating the partnership as a high-stakes investment in his survival and inheritance 33.
In Caledon, Bernard used legitimate Athkatlan goods as cover while arranging the sale of contraband military weapons to Chief Epke: 500 steel crossbows, 10,000 armor-piercing arrows, and 30,000 ordinary arrows 34.
Return to Amn
Bernard led an overland caravan from Caledon toward Athkatla, choosing a dangerous route through the desert, Tethyr, and mountain ranges to avoid predictable threats at sea 32 51. He reorganized the caravan repeatedly in response to changing conditions, including selling camels at inflated wartime prices in Mannon, purchasing cheap carts and pack horses, and acquiring undervalued valuables from refugees 128.
At Kremur, Bernard learned that Athkatla believed him and his siblings dead, while his father was ill and the trading company had fallen into disorder 177. At the family manor, he discovered that his father, Sir Elrot, had intended to eliminate his legitimate children in favor of an illegitimate son; Isadora had uncovered the scheme through her psionic powers and damaged Elrot’s mind by altering his memories 178.
Bernard took control of the family and trading company, then used Amn’s criminal and judicial networks to exact revenge on his father’s mistress, illegitimate son, and their supporters 178 179.
Commercial Expansion
- Myratma finance — Bernard sold imported magic items at high prices, bought rebuilding-era goods cheaply, and lent money to nobles and merchant guilds at interest rates exceeding ten percent per month. Count Taggart Wix’s family became one of his debtors, giving Bernard influence over Myratma’s ruling class and foreign trade 162.
- Athkatlan trade — After reclaiming the company, he sold part of the caravan’s Calimshan and Tethyr cargo while retaining the remainder for the guild’s own shops and routes. He delivered Soth bills of exchange worth 650,000 gold coins and transferred an agreed share of the company 179.
- Hospitality ventures — Bernard developed Soth’s eastern-style restaurant into a fashionable Athkatlan institution, using themed décor, trained staff, porcelain, incense, and VIP rooms. It reportedly earned about 20,000 gold coins in monthly profit and strengthened his elite commercial network 212.
- Mazteck investment — Following Soth’s advice, Bernard and the Nasiwa family formed a new merchant guild to finance western exploration through a commission-based, legally notarized arrangement rather than a profit-sharing contract 213.
- Sambian grain operation — Acting for Amn’s Council of Six, Bernard oversaw a covert grain-dumping campaign in Caledon, selling roughly 170,000 tons at one-fifth of normal prices and planning to expand to at least 600,000 tons. The operation aimed to bankrupt producers, destabilize Sambia, and create future leverage through famine, debt, and rebellion 386.
Personality
Bernard began as a capable but frightened merchant heir whose instinct for self-preservation led him to sacrifice his crew during Harlett’s attack. The betrayal forced him to abandon much of his former gentleness and accept that wealth without independent force, allies, or political influence left him vulnerable 18 24.
He is highly pragmatic, commercially imaginative, and willing to take calculated risks. He can turn war, migration, disaster, debt, smuggling, and political instability into profit, but he remains keenly aware that Soth’s protection is essential to his larger ambitions 128 162 194.
After discovering his father’s betrayal, Bernard embraced Athkatla’s ruthless political culture. His revenge and later financial tactics mark his transformation from a threatened heir into a merchant power broker capable of using wealth, contracts, criminal connections, and public authority as weapons 178 179 386.
Abilities & Skills
Commerce and logistics
Bernard specializes in identifying price differences, restructuring supply chains, and extracting profit from shifting conditions.
- Expanded the Roldan Guild’s northern trade routes and doubled profits early in his career 24.
- Planned caravan routes around desert transport, resale of camels, replacement pack animals, river transport, and regional arbitrage 51.
- Converted wartime panic in Mannon into profits by exchanging overpriced camels for cheap inland transport and distressed assets 128.
- Used post-crisis demand for magic items and reconstruction capital to become a creditor to nobles and guilds 162.
Negotiation and political networking
Bernard builds influence by combining commercial agreements with political protection and social connections.
- Secured Caledon Thieves’ Guild protection for his ships while negotiating a concealed weapons sale 34.
- Used Soth’s reputation as a dragon-slaying hero and feared mage to promote caravan merchandise and deter rivals 162.
- Cultivated Sir Crispian and Athkatla’s political establishment to secure trade concessions and judicial connections 194.
