|---|---|---|
| Dretch | 259 | Dretches form at least two-thirds of many demon armies and are chiefly used as expendable cannon fodder. |
| Higher demon | 259 | A dretch that survives repeated battles may receive the Abyss’s blessing and evolve; such cases are extraordinarily rare, estimated at fewer than one in a thousand—or even one in ten thousand. |
Nature
Demons are chaotic, evil beings of the Bottomless Abyss. They are driven by slaughter, destruction, and predation, rarely take prisoners, and ordinarily continue killing until every opposing creature is dead. 257
They differ sharply from devils: devils emphasize contracts, hierarchy, and promises, while demons are associated with the Abyss’s disorder and violence. Even devils regard Abyssal demons as unreliable compared with themselves. 116
The Abyss’s poisonous environment has given demons extreme toxin resistance; ordinary poisons are described as ineffective against them unless enhanced with Talona’s divine power. 260
Hierarchy and Variants
| Type | Position / role | Documented traits |
|---|---|---|
| Quasit | Lowest-level cannon fodder | Created from only a sliver of soul; timid, cowardly, and often lacking complete independent intelligence. They may flee or beg when facing superior enemies. 256 |
| Dretch | Mass infantry | The principal expendable component of demon armies; survivors can theoretically evolve through battle and Abyssal blessing. 259 |
| Berserker Demon | Elite melee attacker | Possesses immense strength, durability, and devastating physical attacks. Some can assume Gaseous Form, becoming immune to ordinary physical attacks. 168 |
| Succubus | Manipulator and commander | Uses seduction, enchantment, and political manipulation; some lead demon forces or serve stronger Abyssal rulers. 399 |
| Six-armed Naga | High-ranking battlefield overseer | Strong enough to terrify low demons into obedience. One Six-armed Naga massacred retreating quasits to force the remainder back into an assault. 257 |
| Balor | Apex combat demon | Considered a legendary threat; adult Red Dragons can contend with Balors, while Ancient Dragons can steadily suppress them. 262 |
| Demon Lord | Abyssal ruler | Commands armies, grants powers, competes with rival lords, and regards other demon lords as its most serious threats. 260 |
Appearance
Demons possess no single body type. Many are monstrous, ugly, or heavily distorted, though powerful individuals may possess humanoid beauty alongside obvious fiendish traits. 399
- Monashir has a serpentine lower body, a beautiful humanoid upper body, six arms, and stands over six meters tall. 255
- Mastifal has reddish skin, goat horns, bat-like wings, and four arms despite an otherwise humanlike appearance. 399
- Berserker demons rely on massive physical strength and durable fiendish bodies rather than subtlety. 168
Abilities & Traits
Abyssal Resilience
High-ranking demons can withstand attacks that would destroy ordinary creatures.
- Monashir resisted dragonfire behind an invisible force field; the flames only blackened some of her scales. 260
- Weapons enchanted below +3 could not reliably penetrate her defenses, and spells below the third ring had no effect. 260
- Her wounds ordinarily healed within seconds through regeneration. 260
Soul and Life-Force Manipulation
Lesser demon lords can draw strength directly from living creatures.
- Monashir can absorb life force to heal herself. 377
- She can devour the souls of creatures within ten meters. 377
- Victims killed by her soul absorption become controlled shadow demons in less than a second. 377
- She restored herself fully after crushing and draining a high-level cleric. 261
Demonic Magic
Powerful demons possess extensive spell-like abilities.
- Monashir has permanent True Seeing, allowing her to perceive illusions, invisibility, and transformation magic. 377
- She can freely cast first- through fourth-level arcane and divine spells; higher-level spells are limited by tiered daily uses. 377
- Berserker demons can use Greater Teleportation for ambushes and Gaseous Form to evade physical combat. 168
Six-Armed Combat
Six-armed nagas combine supernatural defenses with overwhelming melee output.
- Monashir wields a longsword, scimitar, flail, warhammer, spear, and greatsword; each weapon bears an enchantment above +3. 255
- She is proficient with all weapons and can enhance them with additional enchantment, cold-iron material, and chaotic-evil energy. 377
- Her six-arm spinning attack instantly cut armored warriors and paladins into pieces. 260
- She destroyed six or seven stone giants within minutes while maintaining pressure on Zuo Si’s defenses. 260
Notable Demon: Monashir
Monashir is a Six-armed Naga Lord and lesser demon lord of the Abyss. She participated in the Blood War, understands the value of paladin souls, and sought to corrupt Grand Marshal Wetheran after taking his soul. 260
Demon worshippers were manipulated into summoning her through a sacrificial ritual, unaware that they themselves would become part of the offering. 253 255
Zuo Si’s allies gradually defeated her through coordinated weakening magic, force-field defenses, dragon attacks, and divine healing. Rather than kill her and permit an eventual return to the Abyss, Zuo Si had Xiaen VII imprison her in a crystal ball through a Dark True Word ritual. 261
- Zuo Si — opponent and eventual captor; later able to summon Monashir through her creature card. 261 377
- Grand Marshal Wetheran — paladin commander whom Monashir taunted and threatened with soul corruption. 260
- Davian — interrupted her attempt to dispel Zuo Si’s defenses and restrained her in Red Dragon form. 260 261
- Vermes — repeatedly attacked Monashir with dragonfire and destroyed a shadow demon created by her soul drain. 261
Story Role
Athkatla Sewer Invasion
A demon army expanded through Athkatla’s sewers, slaughtering local monsters, hidden researchers, and other inhabitants as it established a route toward the city. 257
The invasion relied on masses of expendable low demons to exhaust defenders before stronger creatures entered combat. The Athkatla expedition eventually encountered quasits, berserker demons, succubi, Six-armed Nagas, and Monashir near an Abyssal portal. 260
Monashir’s imprisonment prevented her immediate return to the Abyss and turned a major demon-lord threat into one of Zuo Si’s controllable assets. 261 377
