History
Recruitment of Kabuto and departure from Konoha
Orochimaru recognized Kabuto’s talent while he was living at Yakushi Nonō’s orphanage, but Kabuto initially rejected his invitation. Later, Orochimaru accompanied Danzō when Root coerced the orphanage into supplying personnel. After Kabuto unknowingly killed Nonō during an assignment, Orochimaru revealed Danzō’s manipulation and recruited him with the promise of building Otogakure and discovering his true identity 243.
Following Orochimaru’s defection, Hiruzen assigned ninja squads to track him. Jiraiya frequently undertook these missions, although Konoha’s elders treated sustained pursuit as dangerous and costly. Orochimaru also left Akatsuki while continuing to operate his own intelligence network 149 192.
Pursuit of Sasuke
During the Chunin Exams, Orochimaru confronts Sasuke and Naruto in the Forest of Death. Giant snake summons, deceptive clones, and superior speed allow him to overcome their teamwork. He bites Sasuke’s shoulder to implant the Heavenly Cursed Seal and suppresses Naruto’s emerging Nine-Tails chakra with the Five Elements Seal 114 115 116.
Orochimaru calls Sasuke a prospective successor, but his actual objective is to obtain a reserve body with the Sharingan and Uchiha bloodline. He later approaches Sasuke and Kakashi directly, presenting Otogakure as an alternative to Konoha and the Cursed Seal as an introductory gift 117 121 137.
Konoha Crush and the failed bargain with Tsunade
Disguised as the Kazekage, Orochimaru isolates Hiruzen inside the Four Violet Flames Formation during the Sand–Sound invasion. Hiruzen dies, but the Reaper Death Seal deprives Orochimaru of part of his soul associated with his arms 141 155 242.
Seeking treatment, Orochimaru offers Tsunade the resurrection of Dan and Hiruzen. Jiraiya opposes the bargain, and negotiations become a battle involving their students, Kabuto, and giant summons. Orochimaru escapes after failing to secure Tsunade’s help, insisting that he has other means of recovery 155 156.
The second Konoha crisis
A masked Akatsuki member displaying the Rinnegan offers to make Sasuke follow Orochimaru willingly for three years. Orochimaru accepts an expensive agreement involving Chakra Metal and a renewed operation against Konoha 185.
The ensuing assault is publicly attributed to Orochimaru. Eight enormous white snakes devastate Konoha, and the figure appearing as Orochimaru demands “Second Pillar” in exchange for sparing the village. However, Sasuke subsequently recognizes that the attacker was not Orochimaru, and the revived Orochimaru later identifies the giant snakes as techniques that were not his own. The real Orochimaru largely watches from the sidelines and receives Sasuke as the bargain’s reward 187 188 192 470.
Konoha formalizes Sasuke’s departure as a three-year S-rank infiltration mission. An intelligence ninja wearing Orochimaru’s face delivers the meeting location, while Kabuto and the rescued Kidomaru receive Sasuke outside the village. Orochimaru delays their first meeting to conceal his weakened condition after changing bodies 191 192.
Teaching and experimentation
Sasuke’s request to clone Kimimaro prompts Orochimaru to meet him earlier than planned. He agrees to prepare the necessary facilities in exchange for a theft mission in Kumogakure, supplies ninjutsu and fūinjutsu scrolls, and assigns Kidomaru as support 198.
After Sasuke returns, Orochimaru provides a laboratory containing incubation tanks and Kimimaro’s preserved body. He also gives Sasuke a straight Kusanagi Sword and sends him to recover his preferred blade from the Sarutobi clan’s monkey summons 208.
Their cooperation extends to gene sequencing, bloodline-resonance testing, and flesh-fusion research. Orochimaru demonstrates the equipment himself and becomes interested in the distant relationship between the Uchiha and Kaguya clans. He later arranges a confrontation with Sasori as a practical test of Sasuke’s ideas about puppetry, watching the encounter to assess his development 213 214 215.
Defeat and concealed succession
Sasuke destroys the Orochimaru fragment residing in his own Cursed Seal through a prepared barrier and prolonged lightning-fire incineration. This removes that particular vessel, not every means of Orochimaru’s survival 221.
After further training, Sasuke attacks Orochimaru’s main body and destroys the base. A surviving soul fragment emerges through a giant snake and attempts to seize Sasuke’s body, but Sasuke retains control. Kabuto’s refusal to obey either side becomes a test of his allegiance 242.
Sasuke extracts fragmented residual memories and uses transformed clones to impersonate Orochimaru. He keeps the defeat secret while Kabuto manages the inherited organization. Apparent later sightings and negotiations—including Danzō’s proposed alliance—therefore do not establish that Orochimaru’s main body remains active 243 271 273 322 386.
Wartime revival
Sasuke eventually tells Tsunade that Orochimaru is not completely dead, describing his condition as a complicated self-sealing state. Dormant survival copies remain among the many experimental subjects he left behind 386.
During the confrontation with Ten-Tails Jinchūriki Madara, Sasuke arranges Orochimaru’s revival from Anko’s Cursed Seal. Orochimaru accepts the Uzumaki Death God Mask, performs the ritual needed to release the sealed souls, and transfers into White Zetsu before his injured body dies. Sasuke and Kabuto then perform Impure World Reincarnation to restore three previous Hokage 469 470.
Appearance
- Snake-like features: His eyes are described as “Snake Eyes,” and his mouth can stretch unnaturally wide during combat 116 198.
- Body alteration: He modifies a replacement body to reproduce his familiar appearance 186.
- Voice: Retains a hoarse voice even when he does not outwardly look sick 198 243.
- Infiltration clothing: Wears a cloak when entering Konoha alongside Kabuto and the masked Akatsuki member 186.
Personality
Orochimaru treats exceptional bodies and inherited abilities as resources. His interest in Sasuke centers on acquiring the Uchiha bloodline, while his laboratories pursue bloodline fusion, transplantation, and methods of preserving himself beyond bodily death. Conventional cloning initially receives less attention because he favors aggressive experiments capable of producing faster results 137 198 214.
He prefers targets to choose cooperation voluntarily because forced outcomes create unpredictable complications. Nevertheless, his offers are calculated: he exploits Sasuke’s rivalry with Itachi, Tsunade’s grief, and Kabuto’s uncertainty about his identity. He also knowingly tolerates Kabuto’s ambition to replace him while his own strength and technical knowledge remain superior 121 137 155 243.
His mentorship supplies genuine resources without removing the underlying exploitation. He equips Sasuke, teaches laboratory procedures, and rewards useful results, but also pressures him toward ruthlessness and dangerous confrontations. After revival, he quickly recognizes that Sasuke has become too powerful to serve as a realistic possession target and cooperates rather than pressing an unfavorable bargain 208 213 214 470.
Abilities & Skills
Serpentine Ninjutsu and Summoning
- Summons giant snakes, including Manda, for large-scale combat 115 155.
- Releases smaller snakes from his clothing to attack or restrain opponents 116 185.
- Uses unusually flexible, snake-like movement to pass rapidly between trees 115.
- Creates Snake Clones that disperse into numerous small snakes when captured 155.
- The enormous white snakes used during the second Konoha assault are explicitly identified as not his techniques 470.
Close Combat and Deception
- Easily destroys Naruto’s Shadow Clones and remains comfortable fighting him with the Kusanagi Sword 116.
- Uses an Earth Style clone to protect his real body from Naruto’s surprise sword attack 116.
- Combines clone substitutions and concealed positioning with summons rather than relying exclusively on direct combat 116 155.
Cursed Seals
- Implants Sasuke’s Heavenly Cursed Seal through a bite; its initial activation causes severe pain and paralysis 116.
- The seal contains Sage Chakra and provides a route to increased strength 118 137 197.
- Some marks contain dormant Orochimaru copies, functioning as survival vessels that require a trigger to awaken 208 386 470.
- Cells and chakra can activate the proliferation technique inside Anko’s mark to reconstruct him 470.
- Not every seal demonstrably contains him: removing Kidomaru’s Earthly Cursed Seal produces no Orochimaru manifestation 404.
Living Corpse Reincarnation
A body-transfer technique referred to as “Reanimation Jutsu” in several passages; it is distinct from Impure World Reincarnation.
- Allows Orochimaru to replace a failing body and alter the new vessel’s appearance 186 470.
- Ordinarily carries a three-year interval between transfers 191.
- Can suppress another soul but cannot completely eliminate it 253.
- Does not restore soul portions sealed by the Reaper Death Seal merely by changing bodies 242.
- Revival through a separate survival copy entails substantial information loss 470.
Sealing and Forbidden Techniques
- Five Elements Seal: Suppresses Naruto’s leaking Nine-Tails chakra by placing a seal around the existing Eight Trigrams Seal 116.
- Impure World Reincarnation: Learns Tobirama’s forbidden technique and uses it during the attempt to kill Hiruzen; his attempted summoning of the Fourth Hokage fails 203 470.
- Reaper Death Seal release: Uses the Uzumaki Death God Mask to invite possession, cut open the ritual vessel, and release the sealed souls 470.
Scientific Research
- Operates gene-sequencing machinery and formations that measure bloodline resonance 214.
- Conducts flesh-fusion experiments, while recognizing that combining two bloodlines does not automatically create a higher-level Kekkei Tōta 214.
- Transplants Sharingan and Hashirama Cells into Danzō using Shin’s unusually compatible arm 323 389.
- Provides facilities and preserved biological material for Sasuke’s Kimimaro-cloning project 198 208.
- Uses chakra-to-electricity conversion in his bases, simultaneously powering equipment and limiting captive subjects’ chakra reserves 221.
- Sage Mode limitation: Despite prolonged research into Natural Energy, he has not successfully learned Sage Mode; the Cursed Seal is a major product of that research 222 294 295.
