Background
Aoi was Idaten's instructor and deceived him into stealing a Secret Treasure from Konohagakure. The incident left Idaten afraid to return to Konoha and convinced that Aoi, whom he identified as a Jonin from the Land of Rain, would make the Karashi Family's side impossible to defeat in the Great Shrine Festival. Sasuke doubted that Aoi possessed the strength expected of an Amegakure Jonin. 176
The Karashi Family hired Aoi and several Amegakure ninja as reinforcements for the festival. Aoi commanded the group aboard their ship and personally intercepted Team 7 at the foot of Aradokuro Shrine. 177
Following his death, Sasuke identified him as a rogue Konoha ninja while confronting Karashi Kyūroku. His involvement gave the Land of Tea's authorities cause to investigate the Karashi Family, which was subsequently disbanded. 178
Appearance
Aoi's most conspicuous trait was his vibrant green hair, which made him immediately recognizable once his disguise and the dim port lighting no longer concealed him. 177
- Vivid green hair. 177
- Carried an umbrella that concealed senbon-launching mechanisms. 177
- Wielded the Sword of the Thunder God, appearing as a handle that emitted golden electrical sparks. 177
Personality
Aoi was ruthless and opportunistic, opening his ambush by declaring that Team 7 would have to die so he could safely complete his own mission. He attacked before allowing any reply. 177
He was also overconfident. Sasuke's retreat from the Sword of the Thunder God's activation convinced Aoi that he had intimidated a stronger opponent, prompting him to pursue and lose his final opportunity to escape. 177
Abilities & Skills
Senbon and Umbrella Techniques
Aoi used an umbrella as a concealed projectile weapon, launching a wide-area barrage of needles.
- Thousand Senbon Like Rain — fired numerous senbon from beneath the umbrella's canopy and ribs to cover multiple targets. 177
- His senbon were poisoned with a colorless, odorless toxin. The poison ultimately killed him after his own needles were used to seal his meridians. 178
- His attacks failed to land against Team 7, and he was wounded by their immediate counterattack. 177
Ninjutsu
Aoi employed multiple elemental techniques during his ambush, though Team 7 defeated him with little difficulty. 177
- Used Earth Style, including an Earth Wall. 177
- Used Water Style, including Water Dragon Jutsu and Water Senbon. 177
- His combat movements were noted to be slow, while neither taijutsu nor genjutsu appeared to be his specialty. 177
Sword of the Thunder God
Aoi carried and activated the Sword of the Thunder God, an electrically charged weapon identified by Idaten as the Second Hokage's sword. 177
- The weapon emitted a golden electrical glow before Aoi attempted to press his advantage in close quarters. 177
- Its power did not compensate for Aoi's inferior combat ability; he struck a Shadow Clone and was stabbed from behind by Sasuke. 177

Story Role / Major Arcs
Great Shrine Festival
Aoi's past deception of Idaten becomes known as Team 7 travels to Naki Island. Idaten identifies him among the Karashi Family's hired competitors and fears that Aoi's alleged Jonin status will decide the race. 176
After Team 7 reaches Aradokuro Shrine first, Aoi ambushes them. His senbon barrage, Earth Style, Water Style, and Sword of the Thunder God fail to overcome their coordinated counterattack. Sasuke wounds him, then uses senbon to seal his meridians and take him alive for the 200,000 Ryo capture reward. 177
Aoi dies minutes later from poison on his own senbon despite Sasuke's temporary bandages. Sasuke later presents Aoi's corpse to Karashi Kyūroku and identifies him as a rogue Konoha ninja, contributing to the investigation and dissolution of the Karashi Family. 178
