History

Sun Yuan was a high-achieving fourth-year Archaeology Department student preparing for an internship under Professor Xiang. He had a faint romantic tension with Xia Fanxing, a younger student, and reacted poorly when Zhong Shenxiu drew her attention; although outwardly polite, he tried to discredit Zhong's account of ancient cultivation and Immortals. 924

During the Xing Mountain excavation, Sun Yuan initially upheld a materialist interpretation of Yanhan history. The ancient tomb's rustless metal passage, murals resembling Zhong's legend of the headless Tianxing, and the jade-like skeleton inside the Green Jade Coffin steadily undermined that certainty. 925 926 Handling a Bamboo Slip believed to contain the authentic Classic of Mountains and Seas caused him to collapse; the artifact was destroyed after leaving the tomb, but its text and visions remained imprinted within him. 927 928

Sun Yuan pursued the Longevity Cult directly. Taiyi, the cult's leader, attempted to sacrifice Sun Yuan as an Immortal reincarnation. Sun Yuan learned the true name of the East King Duke and invoked it through the Kunlun Curse, summoning a phantom of Kunlun that erased Taiyi. The backlash allowed an ancient celestial demon consciousness calling itself a “monkey” to seize his body briefly, forcing Sun Yuan into a struggle for control in his own sea of consciousness. 940 941
