History
Sun Yuan was a high-achieving fourth-year Archaeology Department student preparing for an internship under Professor Xiang. He had a faint romantic tension with Xia Fanxing, a younger student, and reacted poorly when Zhong Shenxiu drew her attention; although outwardly polite, he tried to discredit Zhong's account of ancient cultivation and Immortals. 924
During the Xing Mountain excavation, Sun Yuan initially upheld a materialist interpretation of Yanhan history. The ancient tomb's rustless metal passage, murals resembling Zhong's legend of the headless Tianxing, and the jade-like skeleton inside the Green Jade Coffin steadily undermined that certainty. 925 926 Handling a Bamboo Slip believed to contain the authentic Classic of Mountains and Seas caused him to collapse; the artifact was destroyed after leaving the tomb, but its text and visions remained imprinted within him. 927 928
His condition worsened into headaches, tinnitus, fainting, and involuntary recitation of an ancient language. He witnessed Engineer Hu use a curse, resisted it with a related incantation, and began accepting that ancient words carried genuine supernatural power. 928 930 His investigation connected the tomb incidents, the Queen Mother of the West, Kunlun, and the Longevity Cult, while Professor Xiang became increasingly obsessed with the same mysteries. 929 931
After a curse-induced confrontation with a false doctor, Sun Yuan displayed a violent power that transformed the man into a burning tree. Zhong Shenxiu observed that this came from Sun Yuan's extraordinary True Spirit, linked to a past life as a Corpse Release Immortal. The event also awakened a reckless, bloodthirsty darkness within Sun Yuan that he feared he could not control. 933
Sun Yuan pursued the Longevity Cult directly. He psychically searched Jin Ling's memories, infiltrated a Kunwu City base with the Fish Curse, and learned that the cult sought Kunlun and the buried city known as Imperial Capital Below. 936 937 At the supposed Kunlun site, he reluctantly worked alongside Zhong Shenxiu and entered Imperial Capital Below after a Longevity Cult sacrifice opened the way. 938 939
Taiyi, the cult's leader, attempted to sacrifice Sun Yuan as an Immortal reincarnation. Sun Yuan learned the true name of the East King Duke and invoked it through the Kunlun Curse, summoning a phantom of Kunlun that erased Taiyi. The backlash allowed an ancient celestial demon consciousness calling itself a “monkey” to seize his body briefly, forcing Sun Yuan into a struggle for control in his own sea of consciousness. 940 941
After escaping Imperial Capital Below with Zhong Shenxiu's assistance, Sun Yuan found that he could no longer use Curse Techniques. He abandoned archaeology and history-related work for an ordinary internship at a cultural and creative company, preferring the safety of mundane life to further encounters with the supernatural. 942 943 More than a decade later, he became a Curse Master and took on the curse of the Classic of Mountains and Seas. 944
Personality
Sun Yuan begins as a diligent, academically minded archaeology student who trusts conventional historical scholarship and dismisses stories of cultivation, Immortals, and ancient supernatural civilizations as pseudohistory. 924 925
Once faced with undeniable anomalies, he becomes intensely determined to uncover the truth rather than accept a simple explanation. He repeatedly investigates dangerous leads despite fear, injury, and the risk of attracting the Longevity Cult. 928 929 935
He is conscious of the corrupting effect of power. After killing with a Curse Technique, he fears the ruthless personality emerging inside him and recognizes that strength he cannot control is dangerous. 933 934 Although he later longs for transcendence and understands the Longevity Cult's temptation, he ultimately tries to return to an ordinary life after losing his powers. 938 942 943
