Background / History

Natsu is one of five Dragon Slayer children brought from 400 years in the past to the future through the Eclipse Gate. He arrives at Fairy Tail with Gajeel, Wendy, Rogue, and Sting under Anna Heartfilia’s care; all five had been trained by Dragon Kings and carried their dragons within them. 87 179

Initially, Natsu distrusts Allen as a teacher, insisting that Igneel was superior. He nevertheless enters Fairy Tail’s school and begins training alongside the other Dragon Slayers. His immediate rivalry with Gray begins with mutual insults and rapidly develops into repeated ranking battles. 87 88 89

Natsu graduates after defeating a Fire Dragon in Allen and Mavis’s illusionary exam. He later pursues S-Class status, but Dimaria defeats him after he pushes his hidden power to reverse an early disadvantage. Natsu challenges her for a month afterward, loses more often than he wins, and uses those defeats to reassess his own weaknesses. 182 199

After learning that Igneel survives within his Dragon Seed, Natsu commits himself to becoming strong enough to help restore the Dragon Kings.
