Karl nodded. Brendan's loyalty and steadiness were beyond question, which was why he had chosen Brendan to oversee this operation. But Karl knew full well where Brendan's limitations lay.

"Brendan's loyalty and courage are beyond reproach, and he'll have no problem carrying out orders. But conditions at sea can change in an instant, so we need more professional judgment."

He looked at Richter and instructed him specifically, "Send word to Brendan that during this operation, when it comes to professional maritime matters such as choosing the sailing route, avoiding wind and waves, and coordinating with the merchant fleet, he must listen more closely to the old captains of the Grimm Merchant Guild."

"They've spent years traveling the seas, and their experience far exceeds ours. Remember, the first priority of this operation is bringing the personnel back safely. We must not act rashly or get bogged down in battle!"

This exchange once again made Karl clearly aware of the Carnford Navy's greatest weakness: it lacked a fleet commander who was truly versed in naval warfare and capable of standing on his own.

That fellow was certainly promising at sea. He had a talent for ships, ocean currents, and naval artillery. Unfortunately... he had ultimately come from a pirate background. He was too wild to tame, and lacked the discipline, broad perspective, and strategic vision required to command a regular fleet.
