Background and History

Karl was originally a modern office worker who transmigrated into the body of Karl von Schmidt, the seventh legitimate son of Duke Schmidt. The original Karl had been disregarded within the Schmidt family: he lacked talent for Battle Qi and magic, while his mother lived neglected in a side courtyard. He was sent north with a small, expendable force to reclaim territory threatened by the Sauron Barbarians. Upon awakening, Karl also gained an Information System that issued one mission each day and awarded rewards based on difficulty and completion. 1

Appointed Carnford's frontier lord, Karl immediately began turning a doomed outpost into a defensible territory. His early rule was defined by the defense of Carnford. Karl built a disciplined force around musketeers, infantry formations, fortifications, and strict fire control, defeating Sauron assaults that had been expected to overwhelm the territory. After defeating enemy forces, Karl incorporated surrendered Sauron troops under Thorsten into Carnford rather than simply destroying them. At the same time, he demonstrated a ruthless political side by secretly ordering the murder of the Broomflower noble Cyril von Eichberg through Thorsten's returning cavalrymen. 158 160

A royal decree later made Karl a hereditary Baron and Guardian of the Northern Border while arranging his marriage to Princess Louise.
