History

Early campaigns

Sunagakure initially divided its forces between two strategic fronts. Elder Chiyo commanded the northeastern campaign in the Land of Rain, intended to restrain Amegakure and seize supplies, while the Third Kazekage led the eastern front toward the Land of Rivers and the Land of Fire in search of fertile territory. 1

The village remained a formidable military power despite the loss of two senior officials to Hatake Sakumo. Its shinobi were considered high quality, and it maintained an advantage over Amegakure during the Land of Rain campaign. 1 57 By the height of that conflict, Sunagakure had fully absorbed the Land of Rivers, established defensive lines there, and become the strongest military force in the Land of Rain. 132 135

Sunagakure later allied with Hanzo’s Amegakure. The alliance served both sides: Amegakure gained support to end the Rain conflict, while Sunagakure gained a strategic partner against the Lands of Fire and Earth. 135 188

Reconstruction and reform

Following the war, Sunagakure used negotiated gains—including Land of Gold commerce, a share of Land of Trees missions, sealing techniques, and a two-billion-ryō ore order—to expand its ninja force and elite training capacity. 197

Shimizu’s canal project transformed the village’s development prospects. The canal carried freshwater from the Land of Rain, enabled water transport, improved rainfall along its banks, and began changing the surrounding ecology; Sunagakure’s residents gradually gained reliable access to water and improved living conditions. 149 150 325

The village also shifted away from dependence on the Land of Wind’s daimyo. After moving against the daimyo’s Guardian Corps, Sunagakure consolidated its own fiscal and political authority, expanded Ninja Academy enrollment, and developed production chains for military supplies. 343 344 483

Rise to hegemony

Sunagakure’s conflict with Konoha escalated after the abduction of the Land of Wind daimyo’s heir. The Third Kazekage appointed Shimizu to command a 5,000-strong force, beginning a campaign that used artillery, Fear Gas, freezing weapons, coordinated small-unit tactics, and puppet battle lines against Konoha. 358 375 376

Its victories over Konoha secured Land of Fire territory and elevated Shimizu’s public prestige. Sunagakure installed administrative systems, taxation, defensive outposts, and garrisons in its newly acquired eastern lands. 439

Shimizu formally succeeded as the Fourth Kazekage, inheriting authority from the Third Kazekage during a public ceremony attended by Sunagakure’s leadership, foreign envoys, nobles, and the Land of Wind daimyo. 461

Conquest and unification

Armed with Ark Puppet Battle Armors, advanced puppetry, jinchūriki, and superior logistics, Sunagakure launched a surprise offensive against Iwagakure. Shimizu led 4,000 shinobi through a large-scale teleportation formation to a point near Iwagakure, while Sasori commanded the Konoha front. 501

Iwagakure fell after Sunagakure destroyed its main force and killed both Ōnoki and Kitsuchi. The conquest gave Sunagakure control over the Land of Earth, though stabilizing and assimilating the territory required continued military operations. 504

After defeating the remaining major opposition, Sunagakure attacked Amegakure and its occupied territories. With Amegakure’s Kage-level fighters gone and its defenses unable to stop Sunagakure’s war puppets, the campaign concluded in less than a month. 536 Sunagakure then convened senior officials and jonin to determine how its institutions would govern the unified Shinobi World. 537

Geography and Infrastructure

• Sunagakure was historically constrained by severe water scarcity; even private courtyards with springs and ponds were considered exceptional luxuries. 30
