At Nuoding Academy, Yu Xiaogang recognized unusual potential in Tang San's Blue Silver Grass and Lin Zhixia's Starfall Bow. He identified Tang San's concealed Clear Sky Hammer, recognized Lin Zhixia's martial soul as the inherited Star River Shattering Bow, and took both children as disciples. He instructed Tang San to keep the hammer secret and cultivate Blue Silver Grass first, while beginning Lin Zhixia's training with spiritual power and spirit-power control 5.

Yu Xiaogang guided their first spirit-ring hunt in the Star Dou Great Forest and later researched suitable beasts for their second rings 8 10.
