You Chen was initially considered a lower-middle-tier duelist in Class Six, making his decision to accept a duel against Chen Jianming appear reckless to his classmates and teacher. His early willingness to take such risks foreshadowed the rapid growth that followed 10.

He became active in underground dueling under the identity associated with the Night Wanderer, building a reputation for high-level duel construction and unusual tactics. His papers on Underworld Decks became popular enough for Kaiba Magazine to offer him a contract; the public later connected him to the magazine author Allure of the Ot 29 105 127 402.
