History
Charles serves Brando during the aftermath of the Ridenburg prison escape. He reports on the fire at the Noble Council and challenges Brando's intention to confront an earl, though he remains at his lord's side despite considering the plan suicidal 46.
He accompanies Brando by gargoyle to the witch Babasha's isolated residence. Familiar with magical shortcuts to power, he proposes spirit magic and claims to know—but never to have tested—methods of deceiving lower-world spirits. He is visibly alarmed by Babasha's concealed spellcasting and by Brando's immediate response to it 47.
As Brando's mage attendant, Charles contributes magical support during the defense of Count Duen's castle by constructing a Law Bow 53. He later reveals that mental control has no effect on him because he is “just a card,” and is subsequently described as Brando's Silver Wizard creature 472 657.
Personality
Charles is outspoken, practical, and acerbic. He openly questions Brando's more dangerous plans, including prison-breaking consequences and confronting an earl, rather than blindly endorsing them 46.
He is knowledgeable about magic but candid about the limits of his experience. His fear of Babasha and inability to perceive her spellcasting show that he does not overestimate his own capabilities 47.
