First Appearance Chapter 5

Background / History

Sart entered the Star Tower as the only apprentice willing to choose Julian when Julian was still a Silver Tier Prophet struggling to recruit students. After Julian became Tower Master, Sart received exceptional access to the Star Tower’s books, ritual supplies, and his mentor’s personal instruction. 38

Despite these resources, Sart spent five years reaching Bronze Tier and remained unable to produce consistently accurate prophecies. His junior Siosand describes every prior prophecy as flawed, while Sart himself regards his talent as mediocre and fears becoming a burden to Julian. 36 38 43

His advancement prophecy—“Go east, Player of the Strings of Fate”—led him to Leyden City and Aaron. Sart considers this his first genuinely successful prophecy and believes Aaron is both proof that Fate has acknowledged him and the key to his eventual Silver Tier advancement. 7 38

Appearance

Sart appears to be under thirty, with ordinary features contrasted by unusually striking eyes that seem to contain starlight. He usually wears the practical linen robes associated with the Star Tower. 5 29

  • Gray-yellow linen robe during his arrival in Leyden City 5
  • Faint starlight visible in his eyes, becoming more intense while performing rituals 5 21
  • Dark leather fingerless Spice Gloves used for rapid ritual preparation 28

Personality

Sart is courteous and often mild-mannered, but he is capable of using his status as Julian’s apprentice to pressure others when Aaron is threatened. He openly dislikes nobles nearly as much as he dislikes cultists, and he distrusts the House of Iris’s political interests in Aaron. 13 14 46

His devotion to Aaron begins as an investment in prophecy but becomes genuine loyalty. He respects Aaron’s choices, repeatedly prioritizes his safety, and ultimately risks his life to preserve the prophecy that gave his own life direction. 27 37 38

Sart is deeply insecure about his prophetic failures. Although he is an accomplished ritualist and alchemist, he struggles to believe those skills compensate for his inability to fulfill the defining requirement of a Prophet’s advancement: delivering a correct prophecy. 43

Abilities & Skills

Prophecy and Spiritual Perception

Sart uses the Gold Coin Path’s connection to Fate, stars, and souls to identify supernatural auras and assess threats.

  • Uses Spirit Powder and a crystal ball to verify identities and expose cult-related aura contamination. 5
  • Identified Aaron’s Rat-Faced Cult aura while determining that Aaron lacked the bloodlust associated with Tinn’s killer. 5 6
  • Used the Eye of Stars ritual to detect a dark-purple soul light in darkness and estimate the enemy’s tier and nature. 21
  • His prophecies have historically been unreliable; a correct prophecy is necessary for his Bronze-to-Silver advancement. 36 43

Ritual Construction and Spicecraft

Sart is highly skilled at constructing, adapting, and simplifying rituals with specialized spices.

  • Can preserve heretical aura, identify ritual components, and infer the purpose of rituals such as the Hand-Chopping Ritual. 19 24 25
  • Detects flawed spices by scent and substitutes alternative materials when necessary. 28
  • Developed Spice Gloves, which hold multiple prepared spices and allow immediate deployment of simple combat rituals. 28 43
  • His ritual expertise is considerable enough that Siosand considers the gloves worthy of formal Star Tower recognition. 43
  • A rushed prophecy ritual without a marking ritual caused Aaron’s soul to separate briefly from his body. 29

Defensive Rituals

Although Prophets have limited direct combat ability, Sart uses prepared tools and rituals to protect himself and others.

  • Activated Basic Deflection Ward through a magical item to block Ed’s sword strike against Aaron. 5 6
  • Created a Star Art Barrier that prevented eavesdropping during his private conversation with Aaron. 7
  • Used Spirit Powder to illuminate the Crawling Hand’s earthbound palms and free the group from its trap. 21
  • Forced the Silver Tier ritual Ward Evil by using a Spirit Letter, Spirit Powder, and his own burning soul; the barrier was concentrated on Aaron because splitting it between two people would weaken its protection. 38

Instruction and Investigation

Sart acts as Aaron’s primary early source of Transcendent knowledge.

  • Guided Aaron through an Enlightenment Ritual and explained the risks of activating heretical aura. 9
  • Warned Aaron that rapid advancement without control could lead to severe consequences. 30 31
  • Assisted in the investigation of Tinn’s death and the Crawling Hand Cult’s activity in Leyden City. 19 23 24

  • Blazing Sun Potion — A precious potion from Julian’s resources, used at Sart’s insistence to save Aaron after the battle with Tog. 41 42

  • Bals — City Lord of Leyden City and a professional ally during the Crawling Hand investigation; Sart becomes suspicious of Bals after the investigation’s suspicious timing and compromised ritual supplies. 17 25 27 28

Aaron’s Verification and Release

Sart arrives in Leyden City to verify Aaron’s identity after the Rat-Faced Cult ritual. Enlightenment and Tinn’s Death Investigation

Sart guides Aaron’s Enlightenment Ritual, helping him become a Black Iron Tier Transcendent while observing the unusual purity of Aaron’s soul. Tasked alongside Siosand by Julian, Sart prepares a ritual using flawed supplies provided through Leyden City. His improvised prophecy ritual succeeds in recovering a cult-related card but nearly separates Aaron’s soul from his body because he omitted a marking ritual. 17 28 29

Sewer Expedition and Sacrifice

Sart accompanies the group into Leyden’s sewers to pursue Tog. Before the confrontation, he makes a verbal agreement to relinquish his claim as Star Tower successor in exchange for Siosand protecting Aaron. When Aaron falls into a hidden passage, Sart immediately follows him. 35 36

Cornered by Tog, Sart refuses to surrender Aaron. He uses Ward Evil to shield Aaron from a Silver Tier enemy, placing himself outside the barrier and accepting the likelihood of death. 37 38 39
