Background and History
Dr. Mei closely resembles the younger Raiden Mei, but is not her future self or a relative. She explains that they are the same person under different fates, originating from separate branches of the Imaginary Tree. In her own history, she studied law, earned a master’s degree, and became a lawyer; her path and Xu Qi’s did not cross again for many years 348. She later became a quantum-mechanics researcher with the Terra Network 332 373.
Xu Qi first meets her aboard the Ptolemy. Their similar appearances and Mental Power unsettle him, though he recognizes that she and Raiden Mei are distinct people 198 199. Dr. Mei later tutors Griseo at the Golden Courtyard. When Xu Qi investigates her connection to Raiden Mei, she lets him continue and insists that their different experiences and thoughts make each of them an individual 331 332.
After revealing her identity, Dr. Mei grows closer to Raiden Mei, who comes to regard her as an older sister 348 350 352. Xu Qi also comes to accept Dr. Mei for herself rather than as a replacement for the woman he already loves; the two confess their feelings 372.
