Background / History

Mu Chaoyun was born into the reclusive Mu Family of North Capital Mountain, a lineage that had preserved secret arts of divination, formations, and heavenly mechanisms for at least a thousand years. As a child, she displayed extraordinary aptitude for the Book of Changes and the clan's esoteric studies, becoming a recognized genius while growing increasingly isolated from her peers. She spent much of her free time reading, cultivating, and tending flowers alone. 158 283

The Mu Family was destroyed when an unidentified expert sought the Black Heaven Book. Mu Chaoyun's father, eldest uncle, and the clan's other Grandmasters died resisting him; even three Grandmasters fighting within the family grand formation could not defeat the attacker. Mu Chaoyun escaped with the Black Heaven Book only after breaking through to Grandmaster at the last moment. She remains determined to identify the perpetrator and avenge her family. 283

While injured and pursued, Mu Chaoyun sought refuge with Xie Yuan. She revealed that the lotus markings on his arm were part of the Black Heaven Book's Eight Trigrams Lotus, which she had concealed on him as a contingency should her pursuers find her. 358

Appearance

Mu Chaoyun is a tall, graceful woman whose cold, ethereal bearing is repeatedly compared to a moon-palace immortal. Her beauty is striking but accompanied by an unusually pale, almost translucent complexion, particularly when injured or exhausted. 174 260 360

  • Long, satin-like black hair. 360
  • Melon-seed-shaped face, distant-mountain brows, and deep, tranquil eyes. 181 360
  • Snow-white skin that can appear bloodless or translucent. 174 181
  • Exceptionally long legs and a slender, elegant figure. 360
  • Often wears plain white robes; initially concealed herself beneath a black hooded robe while recovering. 260 358

Personality

Mu Chaoyun is reserved, composed, and sparing with words. The destruction of her family left her guarded and capable of appearing cold, pragmatic, or extreme when survival and vengeance are involved. 47 135 283

Beneath that restraint, she is deeply caring toward those she accepts. She repeatedly risks her body, cultivation foundation, and lifespan to protect Xie Yuan or alter his fortune. Her concern often manifests through practical actions—teaching, arranging formations, preparing medicines, divining dangers, and quietly making provisions—rather than open declarations. 54 95 130 390

She is also an exceptionally versatile actress. Her disguises extend beyond appearance: she can reproduce another person's mannerisms, speech, demeanor, and social role convincingly enough to deceive experienced martial artists. 130 165

Abilities & Skills

Heaven's Secret Art

Mu Chaoyun's principal inheritance is a profound divination art that allows her to calculate fortunes, dangers, and possible paths.

  • Uses the Eight Trigrams Lotus and associated tools to divine outcomes and assess danger. 49 130 386
  • Can interfere with fortune, such as improving Xie Yuan's auspiciousness before a dangerous expedition. 130
  • Her attainments surpass those of Zhikong Mountain's discarded disciples. 49
  • Using the art to interfere with fate shortens her lifespan, a cost that concerns Xie Yuan. 72 95
  • She refuses to abandon its use while her family's vengeance remains unresolved. 95

Array Formations

Mu Chaoyun is a Grandmaster-level array artist capable of deploying formations for combat, concealment, defense, cultivation, and artifact production.

  • Created a Bagua formation that immobilized and killed the Eight Mystic Maidens after infiltrating their group. 95
  • Used layered arrays to exhaust and ambush Deng Wan, including the Mountain River Concealment Array. 266
  • Protected Xie Yuan's mountain courtyard with enough formations that Grandmaster-level battle aftershocks could not destroy it. 302
  • Established a high-grade Spirit Gathering Array for Star Universe Escort Agency. 222
  • Her formations require preparation; without time to arrange her methods, she is less suited to direct frontal combat. 102 192

Heaven Concealing Art

Mu Chaoyun practices and teaches the Heaven Concealing Art, a rare secret art combining concealment, deception, and divinatory principles.

  • Conceals identities and alters outward appearances for infiltration. 130 165
  • Used the art alongside acting ability to impersonate Spring Third Sister within Autumn Wind Pavilion. 130
  • Warned that the art is not omnipotent; Profound Water imprints can still leave a trace for the Yao Family to track. 174
  • Taught Xie Yuan methods for concealing and altering his meridians. 270

Martial Arts and Secret Techniques

Though more dangerous with preparation than in a straightforward exchange, Mu Chaoyun possesses a wide range of martial and secret techniques.

  • Uses a yin-yang palm art that produces black-and-white radiance and attacks from unpredictable angles. 54
  • Possesses powerful suppressive and killing techniques, though many need time to prepare. 102
  • Has formidable Spiritual Sense, regarded as far deeper than Xie Yuan and Situ Qin initially expected. 66
  • Can teach martial principles outside her specialties, including improving Xie Yuan's axe techniques through general martial understanding. 390

Artifact Crafting and Purification

Mu Chaoyun applies her knowledge of arrays to magical treasures, talismans, and refining.

  • Purified Demonic Cores and removed their demonic qi. 108 255
