Background
Alex is descended from an elf who served under Garrith Shadowsong during the War of the Ancients. He grew up on stories of the legendary Kaldorei commander, which allowed him to recognize Garrith—living under the name Garrad—through his bearing and an identifiable sword at his secluded home. 160
After exposing Garrith's identity, Alex openly admitted that he was capable of ruthless methods but vouched for Dawn King Tyrel's character. His candor won Garrith's trust, and he became the veteran commander's disciple. Garrith later selected Alex as his successor, believing Alex's exceptional talent made him the best candidate to inherit his command legacy. 160 226
Alex also studies combat under Warchief Varok Saurfang. Aware that his personal fighting techniques lack the tempering of a lifetime battlefield veteran, he sought Varok's instruction despite being a Blood Elf Blood Knight and Varok an Orc Warrior. 336
Appearance
Alex is a young Blood Elf commander who wears the crimson armor of the Dawnblade Legion. He keeps a sparse beard and takes pride in his armor being marked by battle rather than dust. 224 226 230
- Crimson Dawnblade Armor Set. 224 226
- Often carries a sword, including the Sunstrider Greatsword bestowed by Tyrel. 224
- Later wields the lightning-wreathed artifact blade Thunderfury. 334
Personality
Alex combines audacity, calculation, and an openly ruthless streak. He prefers gathering intelligence before acting, yet he is willing to gamble when an unconventional plan can create an advantage. His schemes range from manipulating rival factions into attacking one another to retaliating against enemies with overwhelming force. 221 226 296 299
He is intensely loyal to Quel'Thalas, the Dawnblade Legion, and Tyrel. When confronted over the destruction of Ravenholdt Manor, Alex accepts sole responsibility to shield both his legion and kingdom; he later orders the attack on the Silver Covenant while declaring that he alone will bear its consequences. 230 234
Though proud and fearless toward most opponents, Alex is notably intimidated by Tyrel's anger. He considers the Dawn King more frightening than the Firelord and credits Tyrel's authority as the one force capable of stopping him once he commits to a plan. 224 293

Story Role / Major Arcs
Twilight of the Gods Campaign
When Mylah leaves to confront Doom Lord Anatheron, Alex assumes command of the Dawnblade Legion. His aggressive retreat plan saves the legion from the Burning Legion's first defensive line, though Halfor Vimbane considers his ruthlessness dangerously extreme. 139 140
Liberation of the Ghostlands
Following Silvermoon's liberation, Alex leads ten thousand Dawnblade Legion soldiers to Goldmist Village. Facing Super Abomination Luzlan, he recognizes that neither he nor Serin can defeat it directly and orders the village bridge destroyed to prevent the Scourge from overrunning his troops. He later orders Luzlan's corpse preserved for study. 200 202
During the assault on Sunwell Citadel, Alex uncovers the Scourge's use of the Amani Crypt to raise immense numbers of Forest Troll Undead. He redirects his force toward destroying the crypt but is nearly overwhelmed by Death Knight Dakuro Warfang before Sylvanas and the Farstriders intervene. 204 205
Hillsbrad and Ravenholdt Retaliation
Tyrel sends Alex with three thousand Dawnblade Legion soldiers to support allied forces in Hillsbrad. Alex wagers that he can force Prince Galin Thorbain to retreat without losing a single soldier, then orchestrates the removal of both the Stromgarde militia and Foresight Legion from the conflict. 219 220 224
After the Assassin's Alliance engineers an ambush at the Darrowmere bridge, Alex leads the isolated vanguard back across a frozen river. He retaliates by launching an aerial Arcane Bomb strike against Ravenholdt Manor, earning the enmity of the Assassin's Alliance and SI:7. 224 226 227
Siege of the Ruins of Dalaran
Alex accepts personal blame for the Ravenholdt bombing when Archmage Krasus arrives, attempting to protect the Dawnblade Legion and Quel'Thalas from repercussions. 230
During the siege of the Ruins of Dalaran, Alex orders an assault on both Kirin Tor Mages and the Silver Covenant after Saren Weaver destroys the Magic Shield's energy core. His decision forces Aethas Sunstrider into openly siding with the Blood Elves and permanently stains Alex's reputation among the opposing High Elves. 233 234
Dawnblade Viper and the Elemental Artifact
Leading the Blood Elf Holy Relic Association, Alex uses triggered Arcane Bombs to destroy eighty percent of the Dwarven tanks opposing his force. He then orders a Blood Knight flanking maneuver but deliberately avoids annihilating the Dwarves, preventing the conflict from escalating into a larger Alliance intervention. 293 294
Alex proposes pitting the Dark Iron Dwarves against the Bronzebeard Dwarves. Impressed, Tyrel grants him the title Dawnblade Viper. Alex subsequently disguises himself as a Dark Iron Dwarf, seizes practical control of the Dark Iron Legion, and sends it against Khaz Modan. 296 299
Tyrel later supports Alex's ambition to wield a wind elemental artifact by arranging the reforging of Thunderfury. 318
Kalimdor Operations
With Thunderfury, Alex clears an Aberrant Insect nest near Feralas, using lightning and Blood-red Holy Light to eliminate swarms of insects. Garrith intervenes before Alex's excitement leads him beyond the mission objective. 334
Alex's incomplete control over Thunderfury causes a rough landing near Okaz Island. There, he captures Defias leader Garn Marthas, learns of Varian Wrynn's captivity, and uses his Arcane Domain to confirm Varian's identity and detect dark magic affecting him. 338 339
