Background / History
Tyrel was born to King Anasterian Sunstrider four years before the opening of the Dark Portal; his mother died in childbirth. His birth gave the thin Sunstrider line a second heir beside Kael'thas, and he was born in the same year as Arthas Menethil. 1
At eighteen, Tyrel trained in swordsmanship under Salorian Dawngrasper on the Isle of Quel'Danas. Unlike many long-lived High Elves, he pursued training with relentless effort because he feared Quel'Thalas would eventually face a calamity. He also studied history and languages under Prophet Vortale, learning Common, Thalassian, Dwarvish, Gnomish, Orcish, Trollish, and other Azerothian languages. 1 27
He trained under three principal mentors: Salorian in martial combat, Vortale in scholarship and Arcane arts, and Sylvanas Windrunner in ranger techniques. Anasterian approved Tyrel's sole major request—to travel to Lordaeron and become a Paladin. 2 3
Lord of Dalsom
After his baptism, Tyrel returned to Quel'Thalas and demonstrated that his Holy Light could physically strengthen its wielder. Anasterian granted him Dalsom and an army of 10,000 troops to establish the Paladin path among the High Elves. 6
Tyrel founded the Dawnblade Legion by baptizing 1,000 High Elves whose faith was directed toward the sun. Before leaving for further training in Hearthglen, he entrusted Dalsom's administration to Lor'themar Theron, Liadrin, and Dath'Remar Theron; Lor'themar received full authority due to his exceptional administrative ability. 11
Wars of Quel'Thalas
Tyrel led the Dawnblade Legion in the war against the Forest Trolls, combining Paladin abilities, swordsmanship, Arcane magic, and ranger training. During an infiltration mission, he posed as a Forest Troll named Barkan and gained Dakuro Warfang's trust to uncover the Amani attack plan. 27 31
He ultimately killed Dakuro in battle after Dakuro sacrificed himself to save his brother and unit. Tyrel personally buried Dakuro beside his father in the Amani Crypt, choosing duty to Quel'Thalas over their brief friendship. 42
The campaign cost the Dawnblade Legion nearly a third of its 15,000 soldiers, forcing Tyrel to confront the consequences of his own impatience and battlefield misjudgment. 43
Dawn King
After the Scourge invasion devastated Quel'Thalas, Tyrel became a central protector and leader of the surviving Blood Elves. He aided in clearing Silvermoon City, protected civilians such as the orphaned Treyanis, and used Arkanimus to restore Arcane Guardians rather than destroy them. 112
Tyrel later confronted the Fel-corrupted Prince Toshedrin at the Sindra Throne. After defeating him with Arcane Domain and Flaming Strike, he claimed the throne as King of Sindra and promised to protect its High Elves. 149
He discovered Anveena near Tarren Mill and recognized her as another incarnation of the Sunwell. Tyrel welcomed her into the Sunstrider family as Anveena Sunstrider. 167
Blood Knight and Horde leader
When M'uru attempted to subsume his will, Tyrel used the Arcane power of the miniature Sunwell in his soul to seize control of the Naaru's Holy Light. He transformed that power into blood-red Holy Light, becoming the first Blood Knight and later ordering the Dawnblade Legion's Paladins to be converted into Blood Knights. 252 278
As Dawn King, Tyrel repeatedly acted to strengthen the Blood Elf-Horde alliance. He aided the Blood Ring Clan against Ogres, maintained ties with Thrall and Eitrigg, and fought beside Blood Elf, Orc, and Dark Iron resistance forces against Firelord Ragnaros. 263 291 318
Appearance
Tyrel is a notably sturdy and strong High Elf, with a physique atypical for his race. He has golden hair and, after his solar transformation, distinctive golden eyes. 1 10
- Often wears Dawnblade plate armor in battle. 23
- Traditionally fights with a two-handed sword rather than a Paladin warhammer. 12
- Carries Flaming Strike, the Sunstrider family's ancestral artifact blade. 1 114
- His golden eyes can intimidate enemies, including the Amani mage Egilson. 39
Personality
Tyrel is driven by responsibility toward Quel'Thalas and its people. Even as a young prince raised in an isolated and prosperous kingdom, he trained obsessively because he believed danger would one day come. 1
He is respectful and humble toward mentors and elders, crediting Tirion Fordring for his growth rather than boasting about his own talent. With trusted companions, however, he can be mischievous and informal; against enemies, he can be ruthless. 13 21
Tyrel possesses compassion that extends beyond race. He sought to understand Thrall rather than treat him as a mindless enemy, protected the orphaned Treyanis, aided poisoned Woodfang Bearmen, and respected the rebellion of the Silverbrotherhood. 18 112 123 302
His compassion does not eliminate his willingness to make brutal decisions in war. He ordered the destruction of the Darkpine village, killed Dakuro despite their friendship, and later recognized that his own impatience had contributed to devastating Dawnblade Legion casualties. 36 42 43
Abilities & Skills
Swordsmanship
Tyrel was trained from childhood by Salorian Dawngrasper in the Sunstrider family's swordsmanship tradition. His refined technique, physical strength, and Paladin enhancements let him overwhelm less experienced opponents. 1 20
- Uses a two-handed sword as his primary weapon. 12
- Combines High Elf technique with Paladin combat skills. 21
- Can fight while using Arcane, fire, frost, and Holy Light abilities in succession. 48
- His swordsmanship alone was initially inferior to Prince Toshedrin's ancient technique. 149
- Later admits that reliance on Flaming Strike had caused him to neglect further swordsmanship training. 273
Paladin and Blood Knight powers
Tyrel's original Paladin powers stemmed from faith in the sun and manifested as solar Holy Light. He later seized M'uru's power and transformed it into blood-red Holy Light. 10 252
- Divine Storm — Forms weapons from Holy Light and releases them as a controlled storm. 20
- Avenging Wrath — Combines martial rage and Holy Light, manifesting as wings. 21 22
- Crusader Strike, Judgement, Consecration, Hammer of Wrath, and Divine Shield — Used in direct combat and defense. 20 40 73
- Hand of Freedom — Breaks restraints such as Egilson's Cyclone of Binding. 39
- The Reckoning — A decisive Holy Light-enhanced strike used to destroy the Crypt Lord at Dawnblade Port. 73
- Can infuse other Blood Elves with blood-red Holy Light to create Blood Knights. 252 278
- M'uru's available Holy Light is finite, limiting how quickly he can expand the Blood Knights. 278
Arcane arts and Spellblade combat
Tyrel learned Arcane magic from Vortale and developed it into a close-combat discipline. His mastery of Blink became a defining part of his fighting style. 37 39
- Blink — Short-range spatial teleportation used to bypass guards, close distance, evade attacks, and reposition in melee. 39 40
- Can perform consecutive Blinks despite wearing plate armor due to his Paladin-conditioned physique. 61
- Uses Flame Storm, Blizzard, Frost Aura, Arcane Barrage, and Flame Shock to control space around opponents. 48
- Casts long-range teleportation after his Arcane ascension. 86
- Arcane Domain — Neutralizes Arcane attacks by reducing them to their base energy. 149
- Can reprogram Stone Golems and reactivate damaged Sunwell rune stones. 195 296
Sunwell connection
Tyrel is described as an existence born from the obsession and injustice suffered by the Blood Elves across other timelines. A miniature Sunwell resides in his soul, supplying immense Arcane energy and protecting his will from external domination. 86 252
- Senses a bloodlike connection to Anveena, another Sunwell incarnation. 167
- Can recharge Sunwell-powered rune stones, though he cannot create complex rune stones himself. 195
- His miniature Sunwell can provide power to both himself and Aluneth. 252 271
- His soul and Arcane power enable him to resist M'uru's attempted mental control and Khadgar's time magic. 252 272
Equipment / Weapons / Items
- Flaming Strike — Sunstrider family artifact sword. Reforged with a Holy Light Crystal, Sunwell essence, Phoenix God Ao's flame, and the Blood Elves' vengeance; later empowered by Azeroth's Primordial Fire. 114 318
- Aluneth — Sentient Arcane artifact staff able to cast independently, create barriers, open dimensional portals, and support Tyrel against powerful mages. 207 271

- Tirion Fordring — Paladin mentor. Tyrel chose Tirion specifically for his lack of racial prejudice and later risks political conflict to protect him during his exile. 5 51 57
- Salorian Dawngrasper — Swordsmanship mentor. Salorian's demanding instruction shaped Tyrel's martial foundation and later helped demonstrate the Spellblade path. 1 48
- Prophet Vortale — Scholar and Arcane mentor. Tyrel treats Vortale as a parental figure after Anasterian's death and continues to seek his counsel as Dawn King. 1 270
- Valeera Sangunar — Childhood companion and leader of Bloodblade. Tyrel took her in after she was orphaned; their bond later becomes openly romantic. 36 162 184
- Lor'themar Theron — Advisor and administrator of Dalsom. Tyrel entrusted him with full authority over the city during the Dawnblade Legion's training in Lordaeron. 11
