Background / History

Arthas was born in the same year as Tyrel Sunstrider, the second son of King Terenas Menethil II of Lordaeron. His father deliberately arranged Arthas's Paladin baptism at Light's Hope Chapel so that the two princes would meet, seeking to cultivate a lasting political friendship between Lordaeron and Quel'Thalas 1 54.

He trained in martial combat under Muradin Bronzebeard and in Paladinhood under Uther Lightbringer. Arthas and Tyrel were considered closely matched in both combat techniques and use of the Holy Light, having benefited from exceptional mentors 4 22. He later grew close to Jaina Proudmoore after meeting her in Dalaran 15.

During the plague outbreak in Lordaeron, Arthas investigated alongside Jaina and joined forces with Tyrel's High Elf Paladins and Priests. Discovering a child named Timmy transformed into a ghoul drove him into a rage, leading him to pursue and kill Kel'Thuzad with Jaina's aid 60 63. He subsequently helped defend Hearthglen against a force of nearly 100,000 Scourge undead 66 67.

Arthas's resolve hardened into brutality at Stratholme. Convinced that the plague was irreversible, he ordered the city's “purification,” dismissed Uther when his mentor refused, and lost Jaina's support. Tyrel nevertheless remained beside him against Mal'Ganis, after which Arthas committed to pursuing the dreadlord into Northrend 70.

In Northrend, Arthas rescued Muradin's expedition and ignored Tyrel's warnings about Frostmourne. He pursued the rune blade and was eventually corrupted by it; Frostmourne devoured his soul after granting him the power to defeat Mal'Ganis 77 78 87.

As a Death Knight, Arthas murdered King Terenas with Frostmourne, seized Lordaeron, resurrected Kel'Thuzad, and raised former allies Uther Lightbringer and Gavinrad the Dire as enslaved Death Knights. Ordered by Tichondrius, he then led the Scourge invasion of Quel'Thalas 87.

During the invasion, Arthas breached Quel'Thalas's defenses, killed Sun King Anastarian Sunstrider, and offered Tyrel a place in the Scourge as the kingdom's new ruler. He later withdrew when Quel'Thalas's combined forces threatened his position, while Kel'Thuzad's resurrection corrupted the Sunwell 98 102 104 108.

After Illidan's attack weakened the Lich King's control, Arthas became vulnerable enough for free-willed Blood Elf Death Knights led by Saloren Sunstrider to ambush him in Tirisfal Glades. Kel'Thuzad intervened before they could kill him 171. Arthas later completed his fusion with the Lich King and continued directing Scourge campaigns from Northrend 247 371.

Appearance

Arthas is initially described as a young, handsome, blonde prince. After becoming a Death Knight, he is portrayed as a white-haired reaper clad in heavy Saronite plate armor and mounted on the undead charger Invincible 4 95 138.

  • Blonde-haired in life; white-haired after his fall 4 138.
  • Strongly built, with thick chest hair noted before the Battle of Hearthglen 65.
  • Wields Frostmourne after his corruption 87.
  • Uses Saronite plate armor with exceptional physical and magical resistance 95 171.
  • Rides Invincible, whom he resurrected and empowered with flight 87 104.

Personality

As a prince and Paladin, Arthas is caring, chivalrous, and concerned with fairness. At Durnholde, he advocated giving the unarmed Thrall a weapon before the arena match; during the plague crisis, he insisted that Jaina leave Hearthglen to warn Uther rather than remain in danger with him 17 65.

His compassion became entangled with rage, insecurity, and an obsessive need to act. Timmy's transformation drove him to hunt Kel'Thuzad recklessly, while Tyrel's archery rekindled an earlier jealousy Arthas had felt toward Kael'thas. This jealousy developed into an obsession with the elven race 63 66.

After Stratholme, Arthas became increasingly authoritarian and willing to sacrifice anyone he considered necessary for victory. Frostmourne completed his moral collapse: as the Lich King's servant, he showed no remorse for killing Terenas or enslaving Uther and Gavinrad 70 87.

Abilities & Skills

Paladin Training

Before his fall, Arthas was a highly trained Paladin whose Holy Light and martial ability equaled Tyrel's in their early years.

  • Fought effectively beside Tyrel during the defense of Hearthglen 67.
  • His rage against Mal'Ganis nearly manifested as the Holy Wings of Avenging Wrath 70.

Frostmourne's corruption grants Arthas powerful frost and death magic, as well as command over Scourge forces.

  • Casts Death Grip to pull opponents toward him 102 104.

Arthas is an experienced battlefield commander, though his strategic judgment is often compromised by revenge.

  • Negotiated with Frost Trolls and recruited them as mercenaries against the Scourge 78.
  • Exploited Archmage Biluo Hua's concern for High Elf defenders to create an opening in Quel'Danas's defenses 104.
