Beshaba was an evil, willful goddess.
She was narrow-minded and intensely jealous of her elder sister, believing that mortals should revere her just as they revered the Goddess of Fortune—or at least show her respect in words. Thus, although many mortals feared Beshaba's power and intentions, they had no choice but to invite and welcome her to formal occasions such as weddings and coronations, athletic or martial competitions, and naming ceremonies for newborns. Failing to invite her could provoke the Maiden of Misfortune into endlessly retaliating against everyone involved—in other words, afflicting them with permanent bad luck.
This goddess gathered faith through people's fear. Even the Gods were reluctant to deal with her.
Beshaba's Church had a powerful sadistic streak, and the disaster that had erupted near the South Coast was connected to a special ritual it had performed.
Within the Goddess of Misfortune's Church, whenever an important cleric died or a cleric rose through its ranks, her followers held a special ceremony. The former was called [Passing], a rarely performed rite of devotion in which the faithful sent the deceased's body drifting down a river alongside numerous lit candles. The corpse would then transform into a powerful undead creature and teleport to a random location on the continent to cause widespread havoc. The latter was called [Ascension], and its rituals were filled with low drumbeats, dances over burning coals, and various acts of branding or tattooing.
The cause of this disaster was [Passing].
A Holy Spirit Cleric within the Goddess of Misfortune's Church had died.
During the ritual, the Holy Spirit Cleric had been transformed into a terrifying undead creature, a monster with at least a legendary Challenge Rating.
Then a town had suffered a devastating catastrophe as a result!
Even as someone favored by the Lady of Doom,
