A Busy Life
Night falls.
The City Hall allocated them only a small amount of lamp oil, and many people were reluctant to light their lamps. In the darkness, women were drawing water to wash clothes. After nursing her nephew, the Elder Sister put him to sleep; the little guy was very clever and rarely seemed to cry. George brought back a bucket of water from the well outside. Seeing his Elder Sister gesturing for him to take off his clothes and wash them, he simply found a corner and rinsed himself off. Daily necessities were shared, which was a bit inconvenient for four or five people. George still had some money and planned to buy some daily necessities in a couple of days.
A commotion came from the neighboring courtyard.
George glanced at his Elder Sister, who had just put his nephew to sleep, stretched his limbs, and then decided to sneak over and check on him.
Port Nyanzaru has a curfew, but it only means you can't go out on the streets at night. You can walk around in the alleys of the accommodation area without any problem. Someone had explained this to them when they arrived.
You can hear the sounds of prayer and praise in your ears; those are the devout believers of the Church.
Although the first day in Port Nyanzaru was very busy, for many Commoner who had just fled from the war, this busy yet peaceful life was something to be grateful for.
They never expect something for nothing; they only hope to earn a good life through their own hard work.
Congratulations!
"Old Peter! Congratulations on moving to your new house!"
"Come on, have a drink."
May you achieve great success soon!
George could hear the voices of many people around him. The neighboring courtyard was bustling with activity, and the occasional patrolling Guard would pass by, only glancing at the scene before leaving.
There were quite a few people in the yard, some of whom George even knew.
Standing in the crowd was Old Peter, a blacksmith in his forties. George had seen him in Falling Leaf City; he had even repaired his equipment there.
What's wrong?
George saw a table set up in the yard. On it were wine, meat, and some household items. Old Peter was thanking the people around him who were congratulating him. When he saw George, he immediately pulled him over, insisting on buying him a drink. He even boasted to the people around him about his martial prowess, saying that he had personally witnessed George kill a ferocious Worg. George didn't stand on ceremony. He took the glass, took a sip, and then understood what had happened.
Old Peter was a blacksmith, and his skills must have been quite good.
He had been a blacksmith for decades, learning forging since childhood; his ancestors were all blacksmiths. On his very first day in Port Nyanzaru, he was highly valued by the Armory and was assigned a house and a settlement allowance. Today was a farewell to everyone else; tomorrow he would move with his family to a detached house three streets away. From then on, he would be a blacksmith in the Armory, his status likely much higher than these people, and he estimated that in a couple of years he would be able to exchange his contributions for a piece of land.
blacksmith.
A hint of envy crept onto George's face; it seemed that people with a good skill would never be at a disadvantage.
From them, George learned that there seemed to be quite a few people like Old Peter. Those with a good skill were able to find alternative employment; some were assigned to the Armory, others to the Brick Kiln, and still others, who were literate and educated, were placed elsewhere. Those chosen because of their skills immediately became superior, receiving new courtyards the very next day and earning much higher wages than others. This made George envious, as he also wanted his Elder Sister and nephew to have a better life.
The people dispersed shortly afterward.
After a long and tiring day, many people fall asleep as soon as they hit the bed.
George soon went back to rest, Elder Sister, reluctant to light the oil lamp, was mending his clothes in the courtyard, occasionally exchanging a few words with the woman living in the next room.
Night gradually fell.
The weather in May was quite nice, and George slept right in the courtyard. The biggest difference from usual was that he slept exceptionally well tonight.
For him, the terrible war was over.
The night passed quickly.
The next day, George rushed off to work as soon as he woke up. He had nothing when he arrived, and although the City Hall had given him some relief supplies, they wouldn't last long. No one thought the City Hall hadn't given enough; on the contrary, many people were very grateful. For George, as long as he had a job, he could support himself and his family, and many people shared his sentiment.
Three days passed in the blink of an eye.
In just three days, George's small courtyard had undergone considerable changes. Pots and pans were all available, and he bought some fabric to make a new coat for his nephew. Now, his greatest desire was to own his own small courtyard. The refugee quarters were far too cramped, offering no privacy whatsoever; even his Elder Sister had to hide inside to take a shower. Earning a house through manual labor was clearly difficult, so George decided to try and join the army. He believed his personal strength was comparable to that of the Guard.
Humans are highly adaptable.
Within a few days, many people adapted to life in Port Nyanzaru, working from sunrise to sunset. Their lives were very regular and Order. Everyone who worked was provided with two meals a day, which were generally enough to fill their stomachs and often included meat. At first, people exchanged their Work Point for food, but gradually many people began to save them like the city's original inhabitants, hoping to one day save enough to exchange for a house or some land.
I heard that it's much cheaper to exchange land for wasteland outside, and many people plan to cultivate the wasteland themselves after they get it.
George was born Commoner, so farming was no problem for him. As an Advanced Warrior, he was strong enough, and if possible, he hoped to have some land next year.
Although he has nothing now, he is full of confidence in the future!
In the blink of an eye, a week has passed.
George seems to be getting more and more used to the busy and fulfilling life in Port Nyanzaru, a city that is constantly expanding and where new changes can be seen every day.
Hundreds of meters of road have been built to the east, flowers and grass have been planted near the square, and several acres of land have been reclaimed to the south. Ditches have been dug to a certain extent, and the timber in the southwest has been almost completely felled, so they now have to walk a longer distance to transport the wood. These are all very trivial matters, but everyone here seems very busy, even the officials and foremen are running around every day. The laws and regulations here are very strict; even officials who fail to complete their tasks will be punished. Occasionally, he would see some Slave, Slave living conditions were far worse than theirs, and in comparison, many of them felt content and grateful.
I heard that another Slave was granted Freeman citizenship yesterday; it's quite a novelty to hear that.
Because in the outside world, Slave will always be Slave.
Every now and then.
George could see the Wyvern soaring over Port Nyanzaru, flying towards the sea every day and returning before nightfall.
Perhaps people have gotten used to it, and they are no longer afraid.
There were no reports of the Wyvern attacking people. After the initial fear, many people felt joy and excitement upon seeing it, considering it a symbol of good fortune. However, no one was allowed to approach it. George heard from the Guard that it was the pet of the "Little Princess" of Port Nyanzaru. No one had seen the Little Princess yet, but she was said to be a very powerful Spellcaster. Occasionally, a mysterious Witch could be seen in Port Nyanzaru. She was the mistress of Port Nyanzaru, and each appearance was very brief, only involving assigning new expansion tasks to the City Hall officials.
Since its founding, the expansion of Port Nyanzaru has never stopped.
George had the privilege of catching a glimpse of the mysterious Witch, a beautiful and noble Witch who rarely appeared before ordinary people.
George's life still revolves around his Elder Sister and his one-year-old nephew.
As the only man in his family, he felt responsible for ensuring his only Elder Sister had a better life in this unfamiliar environment. As an advanced Warrior, his superhuman strength finally caught the attention of others, earning him a chance to join the City Guard. George decided to seize this opportunity, honing his martial arts skills every day after work. Port Nyanzaru had many seemingly strong individuals, but George had his own advantages: he was only twenty years old and had great potential for future growth.
It was dusk.
George returned to his lodgings with a bolt of linen. His Elder Sister needed a new dress; his own was torn from work, and it would be best to make her a new one as well.
From the high points of Port Nyanzaru, you can see the bustling port.
That place and Port Nyanzaru seemed like two different worlds. Some people longed for the port's prosperity and wealth, but George preferred the Order and tranquil life of Port Nyanzaru.
the next day.
More Half-Elf were sent here. George encountered them that morning George saw a hint of unease in their eyes, which made him smile. Perhaps when he and his Elder Sister first arrived, they were just like these people?
However, they estimate they will adapt to life here quickly.
Because they were all Commoner.
They are born to support themselves through hard work, and in Port Nyanzaru, hard work will make their lives better and better.
George plans to buy some meat to nourish his Elder Sister after he finishes his work today, because she's been working too hard lately and Elder Sister breast milk isn't enough for her baby.
Thinking of that little guy who was only one year old and had big, bright black eyes, a smile involuntarily appeared on his lips.
He looked towards the houses on the other side of the street.
Compared to the congested environment here, it was much cleaner and tidier over there. George clenched his fist. If he could pass the test and join the army, he would soon be able to move into a separate courtyard with his Elder Sister.
Although it is a small brick and tile house.
But for them, it is a new home, a source of hope.
This is Port Nyanzaru.
A place brimming with life, energy, and hope. Although he had only just arrived, George already felt a sense of belonging to it.
This is the power of Order!
