Background & History
Shao Pingbo was the son of Northern Province Governor Shao Dengyun. His mother died early, leaving him responsible for his younger full sister, Shao Liu'er; his father’s concubine, Lady Ruan, later bore Shao Wubo and Shao Fubo. He suppressed the two half-brothers before Lady Ruan and her sons were assassinated amid his conflict with Great Zen Mountain. Shao Dengyun ultimately punished him for their deaths. 197 221 222 226
He first encountered Niu Youdao while traveling with a guarded entourage. After sampling Niu Youdao’s cooking, Shao Pingbo compelled him to accompany him to Northern Province to prepare a banquet for Tang Yi. His entitled treatment of Niu Youdao’s party and his killing of a tavern owner over compensation established his arrogance and ruthlessness. 160 161 164
A nursery rhyme spreading through Northern Province claimed that Shao Dengyun was only a figurehead and that Shao Pingbo was the true ruler. Shao Pingbo immediately recognized its implication: reversing the characters in his name turned the song into an accusation that he intended to overthrow his father. 167
After being released from confinement, Shao Pingbo was given broad control over Northern Province’s military and civil affairs. He recruited scholars and craftsmen, expanded waterways, and rapidly strengthened the province’s population, transport, irrigation, and resources. Great Zen Mountain elevated his protection to the same level as Shao Dengyun’s. 244 245
His attempt to secure warhorses through Qi was undermined when Niu Youdao intercepted the shipment. Shao Pingbo nevertheless later negotiated the purchase and safe passage of thirty thousand warhorses through Qi, while using a proposed marriage between Shao Liu'er and Prince Ying Hao Zhen to seek political leverage. 380 388 389
As pressure from Niu Youdao and Great Zen Mountain mounted, Shao Pingbo feigned submission to buy time, was imprisoned by Great Zen Mountain, and escaped through a prepared secret passage with Shao Sansheng. He fled Northern Province and Qi Capital before entering Jin Kingdom’s service, where Taishu Xiong granted him the title of Northern Province Governor. 507 525 536 546
In Jin Kingdom, he became deeply involved in Blackwater Bureau operations and wartime planning. He helped orchestrate the seizure of Xiping Pass, then personally investigated a conspiracy through arrests and brutal interrogations in Jin Capital. 1226 1228 1234
To protect the Northern Province students targeted by court factions, Shao Pingbo accepted a politically humiliating marriage to Jin’s Seventh Princess, Taishu Huan'er. He later accepted appointment as Superintendent of the Imperial Academy, using his experience training talent in Northern Province to establish the institution. 1252 1253 1271
He eventually allied with Jia Wuqun, who appealed to Shao Pingbo’s ambition by proposing that they contend against the Nine Saints together. Shao Pingbo subsequently sought to seize influence over powerful cultivators, including Zhuge Chi. 1346 1348 1350
Appearance
Shao Pingbo is a handsome, refined young nobleman whose appearance and bearing attract considerable attention. He is frequently depicted in cloaks and formal dress, presenting himself with controlled elegance even under political pressure. 160 214
- Described as handsome, graceful, and “like a jade tree in the wind.” 214 239
- Typically wears a cloak and carries himself with aristocratic composure. 160 617
- Uses golden chopsticks and poison-testing attendants when dining outside his residence. 160
- His hair began turning white after the Northern Province crisis; later, both temples were visibly frosted with gray. 390 1228
- Suffers recurring coughing fits and at times coughs blood, requiring cultivators’ treatment. 1250
Personality
Shao Pingbo is intensely ambitious, patient, and calculating. He treats political power as a contest of timing, information, and leverage rather than a matter of personal sentiment. He can remain outwardly calm while facing imprisonment, pursuit, or humiliation, but he reacts sharply when his plans are disrupted or when Niu Youdao gains an advantage. 239 506 525
He possesses exceptional confidence in his own deductions. He habitually reconstructs larger schemes from incomplete intelligence, such as identifying the hidden conflict behind a supposed Misty Pavilion message or deducing the likely origin of the mysterious “shopkeeper.” 1087 1339
His ruthlessness is paired with a genuine, if possessive, concern for Shao Liu'er and the students who followed him from Northern Province. He justified arranging Liu'er’s marriage alliance as protection for her future, and later accepted marriage to Taishu Huan'er to preserve his students’ safety and prospects. 388 405 1252
