Background
Niu Youdao was originally a Daoist Master with an archaeology background. After awakening in the body of a young villager, he accepted the identity of “Niu Youdao” and adapted calmly to his apparent possession of another body 4. He later explained that he had entered an ancient tomb, awakened in a young man’s body, met Dongguo Haoran of the Shangqing Sect, and accepted Dongguo’s entrusted mission 1592.
Dongguo Haoran left Niu Youdao Protective Talismans containing his remaining cultivation. Niu Youdao was brought to the Shangqing Sect under their protection and confined in Peach Blossom Spring, where Song Yanqing, Chen Guishuo, and Xu Yitian guarded him poorly 7. During this period, he discovered that the Bronze Mirror concealed the Qiankun Jue, which could refine and absorb the foreign True Qi stored within Dongguo’s talismans 14.
After five years of confinement in the Shangqing Sect, Niu Youdao descended the mountain and became involved with Shang Chaozong’s faction alongside Shang Shuqing and Yuan Gang 1592. He gradually built Thatched Cottage Estate into a force whose influence extended across sects, kingdoms, independent cultivators, demons, and overseas allies.
Appearance
Niu Youdao inhabits the body of a young man. After being cleaned and dressed in Shangqing Sect attire, his solid physical frame and composed bearing transformed the impression of him from a dirty village boy to an elegant, unrestrained cultivator 7.
- Generally considered good-looking, though not exceptionally handsome 773.
- Often carries or plants his sword upright before him; this is a recognizable personal habit 450 1195.
- Frequently stands with his hands clasped behind his back, another habit he must suppress while disguised 1195.
- Lightning exposure temporarily leaves his skin bright red, his hair curled, and his clothes ruined 1331.
Personality
Niu Youdao is calm, observant, and exceptionally difficult to intimidate. He approaches threats, negotiations, and political maneuvering with the same preference for information, leverage, and preparation. He commonly conceals his real intentions, accepts humiliation when useful, and avoids unnecessary direct conflict 496 998 1065.
He is pragmatic to the point of ruthlessness. He uses captives, family ties, misinformation, and long-laid arrangements to force cooperation, yet he also protects people he considers his own and repays enduring kindness 1316 1485 1559. Though he seeks freedom and an unburdened life, he acknowledges that cultivation and the unrest of the age make true withdrawal impossible 408.
