Background / History

Cursed Journey to the West incarnation

According to Ao Qin, Sun Wukong appeared several centuries earlier and became a close ally of the Four Sea Dragon Kings. They planned to establish an independent third power alongside the Dragon Clan, opposing both the Heavenly Court and Buddhism. He was described as righteous, loyal, courageous, and trustworthy, in contrast to demon gods such as the Bull Demon King. 1263

The Heavenly Court and Buddhism undermined this alliance. Sun Wukong was once cast into the Netherworld and afflicted with the Aging Curse of Despair Sequence No. 1, causing his repeated deaths despite his exceptional lifespan and multiple lives. Enraged, he fought through the Netherworld, killed its Judge and ghost officials, and overturned the King of Hell's throne. 1263

When the Heavenly Court besieged Mount Huaguo and threatened his monkey subjects, Sun Wukong refused to flee. He fought into the Heavenly Court, shattered the Jade Emperor's throne, and was ultimately suppressed beneath Five Finger Mountain by Tathagata Buddha for five hundred years. 1263

After being placed on Tang Sanzang's westward journey, Sun Wukong only feigned obedience. He retained profound resentment toward Tathagata and Buddhism, regarded Ding Ling's attacks on Buddhism as the arrival of a long-awaited ally, and sought an opportunity to infiltrate Buddhism for the Curse Source needed to kill Tathagata. 1263 1288

Saiyan incarnation

This Sun Wukong is a disciple of the Turtle Hermit who enters a Martial Arts Tournament seeking stronger opponents. He initially pursues recognition and endorsement work, but his primary drive remains life-or-death combat and the growth it produces. 1473 1481

Zhu Qingling reveals that he is a Saiyan and offers to help him locate his deceased grandfather in the Netherworld. His repeated sparring with her exposes his exceptional recovery-based growth and culminates in his Super Saiyan transformation. 1483 1485

Journey to the West: Conquering the Demons incarnation

This incarnation spent five hundred years sealed in a cave by Mahavairocana. When Ding Ling removes the seal, Sun Wukong assumes his armored form, summons the Ruyi Jingu Bang, and initially intends to deceive and kill his rescuer. 1683 1684

Ding Ling traps him inside the Ancient Starry Sky Map and gives him a choice between servitude and death. After his attacks prove useless, Sun Wukong submits. Ding Ling later restrains him with multiple Curse Sources and a golden fillet that punishes hostile thoughts toward his master. 1684 1685

Appearance

Sun Wukong's appearance differs between incarnations, though each is marked by an intense, forceful presence. 1314 1473 1683

  • Cursed Journey to the West incarnation — Wears golden armor, a golden crown, and cloud boots while wielding the Ruyi Jingu Bang. 1314
  • Saiyan incarnation — A tall, handsome youth with prominent spiked hair, resolute eyes, and an orange-and-red Turtle Hermit martial arts uniform. 1473
  • Super Saiyan form — His hair and eyebrows become gold, his hair rises except for his bangs, and golden aura and lightning surround him. 1483
  • Conquering the Demons incarnation — Appears as a demon ape with blood-red eyes and violent demonic energy; after escaping confinement, he manifests armor, dark storm clouds, and lightning around himself. 1683 1684

Personality

Cursed Journey to the West incarnation

Sun Wukong is fiercely protective of those he accepts as his own. He refused to abandon Mount Huaguo when its inhabitants were threatened, taught Pigsy the Martial Dao True Understanding generously, and sought to rescue his captured squad members from Lion Camel Demon Country. 1263 1320 1332

His hostility toward Buddhism is rooted in his imprisonment and the Tightening Hoop Curse Source. Although he initially feigns obedience to Tang Sanzang, he openly admires Ding Ling's defiance of Buddhism and considers him a teammate against their common enemy. 1288 1296

As captain, he can be practical and manipulative. He exploits the Lion Camel demon kings' fear of Ding Ling to rescue allies, while remaining unwilling to excuse their atrocities. 1331 1332

Saiyan incarnation

The Saiyan Sun Wukong is direct, optimistic, and intensely battle-driven. He eagerly seeks strong opponents, becomes excited rather than discouraged by defeat, and repeatedly asks Zhu Qingling to incapacitate him so he can test his growth. 1481 1483

He is also sincere and easily excited, especially when discussing his grandfather and the possibility of reaching the Netherworld. 1485

Journey to the West: Conquering the Demons incarnation

Initially, this Sun Wukong is wild, cunning, cruel, and deeply influenced by demonic energy. He sees humans as fundamentally beneath demons and feels no obligation to repay Ding Ling for freeing him. 1684 1686

After being subdued, he becomes cautious around Ding Ling and increasingly proud of serving such an overwhelmingly powerful master. He obeys Ding Ling's commands, though he retains a confrontational streak and a tendency to look down on weaker beings. 1686 1688 1712
