There were both broad and narrow reasons, but the real reason was this: Lake was very satisfied with General Ross's utterly uncontrollable look of astonishment.
That made Lake feel incredibly pleased.
Lake watched General Ross walk inside, then whistled toward his daughters in the distance. When the three big ones led by Katherine, Skye, and Josie turned around, joined by the gazes of the three little ones—Hebe, Helen, and Pallas—as they came over one after another, he called, "Girls, dinner's ready."
Katherine's eyes lit up. With a whoosh, she appeared directly in front of Lake, blinking her big eyes as she held out both hands toward him.
