Background / History

Lake arrived in the American Variety Universe approximately thirty years before the main story. Raised as an orphan in a barely acceptable foster family, he completed public schooling and enlisted at sixteen so that military benefits could fund his university education. 1 41

His military career was unusually accomplished. He served in the Navy and Marines, completed overseas combat missions, rose to Lieutenant Junior Grade, commanded within SEAL Team Six, and retired at twenty-two after five further operations. His record includes the Soldier's Medal, Silver Star, Defense Medal, and three Purple Hearts. 41 111

After leaving active service, Lake entered Yale University's Art Department through the military education program. He graduated two years early, but spent much of his college life working and saving money for his system draws rather than enjoying campus life. 34 41 He then joined the NYPD, eventually becoming an inspector and head of the Major Crimes Unit. 1 20

Alongside police work, Lake operated in the criminal underworld as the assassin Black King. His need for money was tied directly to his “Pay-to-win” system, which required $100,000 per draw. 2 His assassin career brought him into conflict and temporary cooperation with Carlos “the Cross,” whom Lake ultimately killed in accordance with their agreement. 21 23

Lake later transferred into federal service, becoming Deputy Director of Operations for the New York State Department of Homeland Security. His military rank continued to advance through the transfer system, while he gained influence over supernatural investigations and the Supervisory Bureau. 111 359

His identity expanded far beyond his public law-enforcement career. Through the Force Seed, Cosmo, the Three Fates, and the Chaos Underworld, Lake built a personal universe and ascended to godhood. 318 556 557 He eventually learned that High Priestess Meredith was his biological mother and that Peter Quill was, in a sense, his brother. 815 823

Lake's long-term objective is to establish a Chaos Universe spanning the multiverse, beginning with the World Tree Universe and a new Midgard in the Xylia Nebula. 784

Appearance

Lake is repeatedly described as handsome and usually presents himself as a sharply dressed federal official in a suit. He commonly wears glasses without prescription lenses, later upgraded into a rule-based disguise item. 107 109

  • Normally maintains an ordinary professional appearance through Disguise Glasses. 109
  • Appears with long blonde hair and the Gemini Gold Cloth when acting as Saga. 823
  • Uses sky-blue hair and the identity of Kanon, King of Midgard, in Atlantis-related affairs. 512 523
  • Has no lasting scars because of his Immortal Body; he conceals this anomaly with a history of cosmetic-hospital purchases. 398

Personality

Lake is intensely pragmatic, ambitious, and motivated by personal independence. His early life taught him to avoid relying on anyone else, and he considers placing hope in others a mistake. 315 Even after attaining godhood, he remains preoccupied with acquiring power, expanding the Chaos Universe, and securing enough freedom to avoid being controlled by anyone. 243 834

He is calculating in both battle and politics. Lake uses bluffs, intimidation, bureaucratic maneuvering, aliases, and psychological control as readily as direct force. 36 296 400 His military nickname, “Tiger-Fox,” reflects this: a fox-like strategist hiding behind the imposing presence of a tiger. 471

Lake maintains a cultivated public persona as an uncompromising law enforcer, summarized by his declaration that he and evil are “irreconcilable.” 471 Privately, he is far more morally flexible, especially when dealing with enemies, obstructive institutions, or threats to those he considers his own. 36 396

Despite his self-interest, Lake is protective of his family, allies, and subordinates. He adopts Skye, safeguards Maria Hill through federal jurisdictional conflict, and builds Paradise Island's Amazonian warriors to protect Seifer and their daughter. 126 396 813

Abilities & Skills

Pay-to-win System

Lake's system grants a draw opportunity for every $100,000 spent. Its rewards range from mundane weapons and items to divine authorities, cultivation resources, bloodlines, and laws. 1 2

  • His first draw produced the SSR-grade Immortal Body. 2
  • The system later upgrades its draw pool, removing low-value rewards and raising the minimum guarantee to B-grade. 242
  • Lake discovers methods of repeatedly farming draw opportunities through Mephisto and the Hell Dimension. 558
  • Golden Legend draws provide many of his strongest items, including divine laws, weapons, and cosmic resources. 559 627 756

Immortal Body

Lake's Immortal Body allows him to recover from fatal injury and prevents visible scarring.

  • He survives being bitten to death by a vampire and retaliates after reviving. 142
  • His lack of military scars becomes suspicious enough that he fabricates a cosmetic-surgery explanation. 398
  • His clones created through the Four-Clone Technique are likewise immortal. 54

Copy and Extraction

Lake can detect replicable entities and extract their abilities.

  • Initially acquired as the R-grade skill Copy. 2
  • Copies Gun Fu and Adrenaline Boost after examining a corpse. 6
  • Extracts the Winter Soldier's physical enhancement, anti-aging serum effects, and language knowledge during combat. 74
  • Cannot automatically copy every target; Natasha did not trigger an extraction prompt when he first tested the ability on her. 74

Clones and Displacement

Lake can create multiple autonomous copies of himself and exchange positions with them.

  • Four immortal clones defend his home against a ten-man assassin team. 54
  • Eleven clones fight alongside him during the San Lorenzo conflict. 237
  • Clones share his state and abilities, allowing coordinated combat and simultaneous operations. 237
  • He can displace himself to a surviving clone regardless of distance. 796

Force, Cosmo, and the Sixth Sense

Lake's core supernatural foundation combines the Force Seed with his self-created Cosmo system.

  • His Unified Force integrates Light and Dark Side concepts into one personal power. 213
  • The Chaos Universe is formed from the Force Seed and Cosmo, serving as the source of his fundamental power. 331
  • Awakening the Sixth Sense allows him to wield the Gemini Gold Cloth for a short period. 270
  • He can detect lies through the Sixth Sense. 339
  • He uses Cosmo to create the Gemini Labyrinth and replace surrounding space. 317

Gemini Gold Cloth

As Saga, Lake wields the Gold Cloth of Gemini and its associated techniques.

  • Initially too powerful for him to use safely beyond approximately three minutes. 270
  • Grants immense combat enhancement and a Gold Saint identity recognized across supernatural communities. 276
  • Includes the Gemini Labyrinth, a spatial technique used against Himiko. 317
  • Includes the Illusory Demon Emperor Fist, which suppresses consciousness and compels victims to obey. 296

Chaos Universe and Divine Authority

Lake possesses complete authority over the universe he created.

  • The Three Fates submit to him and weave destiny for his universe without determining Lake's own fate or that of those he pardons. 322
  • He establishes the Chaos Underworld using Hell Dimension origin and populates it with souls, River Styx water, and Underworld Demon Stars. 556 557 558
  • He can create life, as demonstrated by the immortal Amazonian warriors of Paradise Island. 813
  • He controls the Cosmo born in his universe and can remove it from others at will. 342
  • His stated objective is a multiversal Chaos Universe under his control. 784

Investigation and Interrogation

Lake is an experienced detective whose investigative skill is reinforced by federal access, informants, and ruthless interrogation methods.

  • Former head of the NYPD Major Crimes Unit. 20
  • Uses a broad network of registered informants and regularly claims informant fees for his cases. 356
  • Relies on direct persuasion, coercion, and violence rather than prolonged interrogation procedures. 83
  • Uses Red Queen and Homeland Security databases to investigate targets, military secrets, and surveillance footage. 589 795
