Background / History

Yelena was orphaned before she could remember her parents. Her father died shielding her mother from arrows, and her mother died protecting him; Yelena was subsequently confined to an Ursus mine, where she endured starvation, forced labor, beatings, freezing conditions, and repeated abuse alongside other Infected. Her sole dream was the warm home her grandmother had described to her. 2

After an Ursus captain left her unconscious in the snow, a pillar of light annihilated the mine. Facing the blast, Yelena awakened cryogenic Originium Arts and survived at the mine's edge while the mine and its occupants were destroyed. 2

Alone and starving in the frozen wilderness, Yelena searched the ruins for food, finding only matches. Lost in a forest she had never seen beyond the mine, she eventually tried to eat a figure floating in a river—Tesla Zero, inhabited by Chlorine Sodium. 3 Chlorine Sodium brought her to an abandoned village, fed her, and began caring for her despite Yelena's fear that the safety and warmth were unreal. 4

Her uncontrolled Arts initially turned their shelter into an ice cellar. Chlorine Sodium trained her to suppress and direct the cold while offering protection, gradually becoming the person Yelena trusted most. 5 6 7 Yelena later accompanied her to Ursus cities and Chernobog after Chlorine Sodium concealed her visible Originium crystals and supplied her with documents, allowing her to pass military police unnoticed. 16

When an Infected Enforcement Squad cornered her, Yelena retaliated with her Arts, freezing and killing several members in a rage driven by memories of the mine. An Emperor's Royal Guard broke through her cold field and nearly killed her before Chlorine Sodium intervened. 9 She was later detained with other Infected in Chernobog, transported in a convoy, and nearly used as a disposable power source by Arts Casters; the Snow Demon’s assault destroyed the casters before they could exploit her further. 22 23 27

In Lungmen, Yelena helped defend Chlorine Sodium's clinic from the Black Hand Gang, then independently defeated a larger group of armed thugs at her home. 29 31 She was later kidnapped, defeated by a Demonkin combatant, and held in a slaughterhouse where captives were harvested for organs. Chlorine Sodium killed her captors and recovered her, after which Yelena clung to her despite witnessing the carnage. 32 33 34 35

Yelena is a small, slender girl with gray-white to snow-white hair and gray eyes. Her frail appearance reflects years of hunger and labor, though her close-range fighting ability belies her stature. 2 4 14 33
