"Strange. How could there be a river here?"

Lin Li was filled with doubt.

Every water source he had seen in the crypt before had been formed by stalactites dripping slowly over time. The amount of water had been negligible, nowhere near enough to form such a great river. Its source simply could not be explained.

Following the river upstream would most likely lead him to its source, but Lin Li immediately dismissed the idea.

The upstream channel was narrow and cramped, littered with large rocks pressed tightly together and riddled with crevices—the perfect place for packs of exotic beasts to hide. Going in rashly was far too risky.

He turned and followed the gentler stretch of riverbank downstream, his mind calculating at high speed.

At the river's current flow rate, if there were no outlet, it would not take long for the entire second level of the crypt to be flooded.

Yet vast areas of the second level were dry, the soil hard, with no trace of having been soaked.

The answer was already obvious.

This underground river had to connect to a hidden drainage passage deeper within the crypt, allowing the water to flow into some unknown subterranean space.

Lin Li stepped onto the slick moss by the river and strolled slowly along the underground riverbank.

The river followed the slope of the land, cool mist washing over his face, carrying the damp, earthy stench of soil.

As he walked, Lin Li clearly noticed that the current gradually slowed. The splashes that had once surged and crashed against the rocks became far more gentle.

He saw through it at once.

Whenever a river was about to reach its end and flow into a larger body of water, its current would slow. That was an unchanging law of waterways.
