Background

Chen Jiaying is a middle-aged Wudang disciple of the Hao generation who serves as deputy director of Zhejiang’s Special Department. He leads a team that includes his disciple Wang Ming and is trusted with sensitive state-security operations. 28

During an operation involving a classified metal-alloy invention from Zhejiang University, Chen is seriously injured in a clash with Japanese elite ninjas. Rather than rushing into a second confrontation, he orders his team to stay calm and personally seeks assistance from Zhang Hupan, a little-documented Guest Elder attached to the Special Department. 28

Chen initially cannot reconcile Zhang Hupan’s ordinary student appearance with the status of a Guest Elder, but he does not dismiss him as casually as Wang Ming does. Zhang heals Chen’s injuries, elevates him to four-star level, and reveals a power Chen associates with legendary cultivators. 29

After witnessing Zhang incapacitate the guards and Japanese ninjas without direct combat, Chen becomes deeply reverent toward him. Zhang later gives him two low-grade celestial pills and cultivation instructions; Chen takes one himself and divides the other among four disciples. 30 46

Chen eventually learns that Zhang Hupan is the sole living disciple of Wudang founder Zhang Sanfeng and the sect’s highest authority. Horrified that he had involved such an ancestor in a government mission, Chen resolves not to disturb him again except in matters of extreme importance. 46

Chen can also be forceful when Wudang’s dignity is challenged. At the Lin family banquet, he acts on Zhang’s order to discipline the young masters, repudiates Wang Hong’s accusation against Zhang, and threatens to end the Wang family’s cooperation with Wudang. 47 48
