Background / History

Zhang Hupan was an abandoned infant found beside West Lake by Zhang Sanfeng in 1900. Since the child’s original surname was unknown, Zhang Sanfeng gave him his own surname and named him Hupan—“lakebank”—with the Daoist name Yunming. He became Zhang Sanfeng’s last disciple. 1

He grew up in the Xuanwu Immortal Realm, where Zhang Sanfeng taught him medicine, martial arts, and the Heavenly Dao. His exceptional talent, spiritual environment, and access to immortal pills allowed him to attain the Nascent Soul Stage at one hundred, a feat none of Zhang Sanfeng’s four major disciples achieved. 1

Before ascending, Zhang Sanfeng entrusted Hupan with the Universe Ring, Wudang’s highest token of authority, and ordered him to protect the sect, do good in the mortal world, and avoid harming the human realm. After remaining in the immortal realm for a year, Hupan left its ancient beast demons in charge and descended the mountain. 2

He first returned to Wudang, where his seniority and the Universe Ring established him as the sect’s true highest authority. He distributed pills and artifacts, taught the elders the Heavenly Dao, and greatly improved their cultivation before seeking a fuller understanding of modern life in Hangzhou. 5 7 9 12
