Background / History

Mo Tan was a 21-year-old living alone when he began playing Innocent World. He diagnosed himself with Dissociative Identity Disorder at thirteen, concealed it successfully, and used illegally obtained medical and police data to research his condition. He has no arrest record. 2

His mind is divided into four distinct states that share memories, identity, and intelligence rather than functioning as wholly separate people. Three remain active in the game: the ordinary, socially adaptable Absolute Neutral Hei Fan; the thrill-seeking Chaotic Neutral Tan Mo; and the morally uncompromising Lawful Good Mo. The fourth personality was deliberately sealed away and is regarded by all of his other selves as the least necessary and most dangerous. 4 13 35

Mo Tan can consciously force a switch through self-hypnosis, though doing so consumes substantial energy. His condition also appears tied to an abnormality in Innocent World: he can maintain three separate characters, but experiences unexplained losses of in-game time. 13 27 35

He created Hei Fan on December 31, 2048, joined Rockpile City’s autonomous army, and became the Fenrir Squad’s priest. Tan Mo emerged separately in Maple Sugar Town, where he manipulated the necromancer Medi Le and acquired the Trickster class. Mo entered the game as a Half-Dragon and initially traveled with the Sylph Caravan before becoming an adventurer in Anka Market. 2 3 4 5 20

Appearance

In reality, Mo Tan is shorter than Yi Dong, usually wears inexpensive casual clothes, and has a contradictory presence shaped by whichever personality is active; his eyes can seem mischievous, righteous, or friendly depending on the moment. 8

  • Tan Mo is a slender half-elf with black hair; his original half-elf model had emerald-green hair and eyes. 4
  • Tan Mo frequently changes his presentation through clothing and disguise, appearing at different times as a hooded thief, a white-robed bard with gold-rimmed glasses, and a Dark Elf. 1 44
  • Mo possesses a Half-Dragon body and tail due to his Thunder Dragon bloodline. 5 6
  • Hei Fan initially wore only a linen outfit with minimal protection after character creation. 2

Personality

Absolute Neutral — Hei Fan

Hei Fan is Mo Tan’s most conventionally “normal” state: gentle, mildly lazy, sociable, hesitant, and inclined to follow ordinary moral expectations. He wants to be useful to others but is vulnerable to self-loathing when he believes he has failed them. 27 31

During the Fenrir Squad’s battle against Fireclaw orcs, Hei Fan turned his support role into battlefield command. By observing every teammate’s movements and trusting their abilities, he issued timely instructions that helped break the enemy encirclement. 31 32

Chaotic Neutral — Tan Mo

Tan Mo pursues amusement and satisfaction without a fixed moral objective. He is theatrical, manipulative, and comfortable creating problems for others, but his cruelty is calculated rather than thoughtless. He treats danger, rivalry, and even potential defeat as entertainment. 4 17 35

He can be unexpectedly compassionate when it suits his own judgment, as shown when he saved Cole from the Crimson Ridge Beasts and chose to pursue the possibility of resurrecting Rona. 10 11

Lawful Good — Mo

Mo is principled, compassionate, and intensely opposed to evil. His morality does not make him naïve: he uses intelligence and planning to support others rather than allowing his kindness to be exploited. 1 4

He accepts responsibility for people he believes are worth helping, including Yaya, even when doing so exposes him to debt, danger, or inconvenience. 21 37 47

Abilities & Skills

Personality Switching and Multi-Avatar Access

Mo Tan’s three active personality states correspond to separate Innocent World characters. He retains the memories and practical experience gained by each persona, allowing one avatar to benefit from another’s combat knowledge. 4 30 35

  • Can create a short transition window of roughly five minutes before a personality switch. 4
  • Can deliberately induce a switch through self-hypnosis, at a significant physical and mental cost. 27
  • His three avatars allow access to different races, alignments, classes, equipment, and skill sets. 35
  • His condition is associated with unexplained missing game time and unstable logouts. 18 35

Hacking and Information Gathering

Mo Tan is an accomplished hacker and one-half of the hacker duo known as Black Sun. 9

  • Accessed confidential medical and police databases while researching his own condition. 2
  • Operates the heavily modified Hunting Angel System for targeted searches and digital tracking. 9 14
  • Can erase traces and camouflage his address while under pursuit from another skilled hacker, Mu You. 14
  • Uses social engineering, acting, and partial truths to make targets reach conclusions he has prepared for them. 4 23

Cunning and Deception

Tan Mo’s Cunning School abilities complement his manipulation skills. By Trickster Lv. 2 and Thief Lv. 1, he possessed Confusion, Bewitchment, Stealth, Thievery, and Throat-Slitting. 10

  • Guile — Charms a target into treating him as an ally; effectiveness and duration depend on the target’s state of mind and the relative intelligence of both parties. 36
  • Backhand Spin Thrust — Rapidly strikes a target within five meters, returns to the original position, and guarantees evasion against theoretically avoidable physical attacks during the movement. 25 36
  • Used his acting, deductions, and false promise of resurrection to destabilize and manipulate Medi Le, who was vastly stronger than him in direct combat. 4
  • Subdued Crimson Ridge Beasts without directly fighting them and saved Cole from their ambush. 10 11

Unbeliever

Tan Mo’s Unbeliever talent prevents him from selecting a faith because he holds no genuine reverence for higher beings. 10

  • Its influence is weaker against powerful or deeply faithful believers. 26
  • Can induce doubt or subtly distort believers’ reactions, allowing Tan Mo to extract information from Holy Knights. 26
  • Cannot be reconciled with a conventional religious affiliation. 10

Divine Support

As Hei Fan, Mo follows the Dawn Goddess Pokesi and serves as the Fenrir Squad’s support caster. 3

  • Luminescence — Creates holy light in a five-meter radius and reduces enemies’ stealth level within the illuminated area. 3
  • Holy Touch — Restores a small amount of a target’s health, with a one-minute cooldown. 3
  • Fortitude Prayer, Gleaming Bolt, and Edict: Shield provide healing, buffs, offense, and protective support. 3 29 31
  • Piety increases passive Piety regeneration by 30%; after standing still in combat for 30 seconds, it further boosts passive Mana and Piety recovery by 50% until he moves. 31
  • Received Neva Faou’s manuscript, which taught Edict: Shield and began his class quest toward becoming a Discipline Priest. 29

Warrior Combat

Mo’s Half-Dragon body grants him greater physical strength and resilience than his other avatars. 5 6

  • Crashing Strike — Charges one to ten meters with a melee weapon, damages and knocks back enemies in the path, and costs stamina. 6
  • Mad Dash — Charges eight to twenty meters, guarantees a critical hit on the nearest enemy upon arrival, and grants immunity to slowing, rooting, and stunning during the charge. 19
  • Devotion increases his health when fighting beside allies, while Iron Will grants additional defense when his health falls below 30%. 5
  • Although initially inexperienced in direct combat, he continued fighting while injured during the Sylph Caravan ambush. 6

Tactical Observation

Mo Tan compensates for limited online time with rapid analysis, strong memory, and careful observation. 18 31

  • Learned each Fenrir Squad member’s habits and abilities while healing them, then converted that knowledge into effective battlefield orders. 31 32
  • Memorizes maps and builds a top-down mental model of his surroundings to compensate for an exceptionally poor natural sense of direction. 22
  • Uses information from all three avatars’ experiences to make decisions that a single low-level character normally could not. 30

Equipment / Weapons / Items

  • Shadowfang dagger — Used by Tan Mo to kill Muse and members of the Black Tower Thieves’ Guild. 1
  • Magic wand — Given to Mo by the gnome sorceress Milu after she recognized his willingness to help others. 1
  • Blood Sacrifice Dagger — Common one-handed dagger suited to the Thief class. 10
  • Mag’s Adventure Journal — A valuable travel journal gifted by Mag Ironfist. 19
  • Excellent-quality chainmail and enchanted black steel longsword — Equipment provided by Mag when Mo sought to become a mercenary. 19
  • Neva Faou’s Manuscript — Special item that teaches Edict: Shield and activates the Discipline Priest class quest. 29
  • Nameless Blood Pact — Legendary item activated on Ji Xiaodao. 34
  • Myriad Faces — Equipment used by Tan Mo to disguise himself as a Dark Elf. 44

Relationships

  • Yi Dong — Childhood friend from the orphanage and one of the few people who knows about Mo Tan’s condition. 7 13
  • Shuangye / Mu You — Black Sun’s other half and Mo Tan’s long-standing hacking rival. Their in-game meetings are marked by mutual provocation, manipulation, and competition. 9 14 17
  • Milu — Gnome sorceress who gave Mo a magic wand after witnessing his selfless intent to help Little Dick. 1
  • Fenrir Squad — Hei Fan’s military unit. He serves alongside Ned, Crab, Yinna, Salazar, and Shuangye, eventually earning their trust as a healer and tactician. 3 31 32
  • Mag Ironfist — Dwarven mercenary captain who respects Mo’s actions during the caravan battle and rewards him with equipment, skills, and his adventure journal. 5 18 19
  • Cole — Rogue rescued by Tan Mo after the Crimson Ridge Beast ambush. Cole follows him out of loyalty and hope for Rona’s resurrection. 10 11 45
  • Ai Vaniel — Cleric who chooses to follow Tan Mo after he saves her and avenges her companions. 45
  • Ji Xiaodao — Dark Elf player who refuses to leave Mo Tan alone despite his hostility. He regards her as a potential tool, activates Original Sin on her, and binds her with the Nameless Blood Pact. 13 34
  • Yaya — Fangtooth Dog-Girl adventurer whom Mo repeatedly guides, protects, and takes responsibility for. 22 37 47
  • Jadeka — Elderly novice mage and temporary adventuring teammate. Mo respects his persistence and affirms him as a mage despite his failures. 47 48

Story Role / Major Arcs

Character Creation and Fenrir Squad

Hei Fan enters Innocent World, joins Rockpile City’s autonomous army, becomes a Priest of the Dawn Goddess, and is assigned to the Fenrir Squad. 2 3

During the search for the missing Kindling Squad, he supports Fenrir against a much larger Fireclaw orc force. After initially believing he is inadequate, he takes command of the group’s movements and helps lead them to survival. 29 31 32

Medi Le and the Pato City Plot

Tan Mo receives an abnormal guide quest involving Medi Le, a necromancer trying to resurrect his wife. He exploits Medi’s grief, kills him through deception, and becomes a Trickster. 4 5

He later saves Cole, investigates Pato City, and directs resistance against the Whisper Sect while using Cole, Ledo, Ai, and Bayes in his plans. 10 11 35 44 45

Notable Quotes

“Wise man, gambler, madman, demon, hero... I can be any of them, and of course, I can be none of them. It depends on the surrounding environment and my mood.” 45

Trivia

  • Mo Tan’s natural sense of direction is so poor that he trained himself to memorize maps and mentally reconstruct his surroundings from above. 22
  • During the Sylph Caravan battle, an unexplained outburst caused numerous Sand Goblins and Mud Fishmen to collapse, bleed, die, or lose consciousness; Mo then remained unconscious for two days. 18
  • His limited online time is his greatest acknowledged weakness, despite the potential and combined experience of his three avatars. 18
