Background / History

Nezha was born to Li Jing and Yin Shiniang after a pregnancy lasting more than three years. Chen Xuan identified him as a divine fetus, easing Li Jing’s fears about the unusual birth. Li Jing entrusted Nezha to Chen Xuan as a disciple; when Taiyi Zhenren arrived to claim the Spirit Pearl’s reincarnation for his own sect, Chen Xuan refused and defeated him 202.

Chen Xuan taught Nezha Martial Dao alongside magic. On a trip to the East Sea, Nezha provoked the dragon prince Ao Bing and was knocked unconscious. He later obtained the Ancestor Dragon Token from the East Sea Dragon King and acquired the Fire Dragon Spear and Wind Fire Wheels 204 205 244.

Nezha fought for Yin Shang against Xiqi, repeatedly facing Yang Jian. Yang Jian struck him down during a major battle, and Li Jing and Yin Shiniang retrieved their badly injured son from the battlefield 233 245 249. Nezha later served in the Heavenly Court, where he obtained the Rebellious Son system and began refusing orders from Haotian 330 338.

Appearance

Nezha is depicted as a small child during the Investiture war, though he later grows while retaining a youthful appearance 233 308 437.

• As a child, he has a robust build and wears a red bellyband 233.
• He can transform to show an older-looking form when challenged about his appearance 437.

Personality

Nezha is mischievous, boastful, and quick to challenge opponents. He taunts Xiqi fighters before battle, claims he can face several of them at once, and eagerly asks Chen Xuan when they can return to the East Sea for more treasures 233 244. His recklessness nearly costs him his life in the Yin Shang–Xiqi war 249.

His defiance continues in the Heavenly Court. The Rebellious Son system gives him a reward objective for refusing Haotian, but Nezha is already pleased by the prospect; he later refuses another order at the Peach Banquet 330 338.

Relationships

• Li Jing — father. Proud of Nezha’s divine birth, he later scolds him for nearly dying in battle and asks for his help obtaining the Golden Exquisite Pagoda 202 249 257.
• Yin Shiniang — mother. She helps retrieve Nezha after Yang Jian strikes him down and comforts him afterward 249.
• Chen Xuan — master. He claims Nezha as his disciple before Taiyi Zhenren can take him and personally teaches him Martial Dao 202 204.
• Yun Xiao — an ally whom Nezha treats affectionately, despite her scolding him for his mischief 232.
• Big Yellow — Nezha calls on the dog to fight alongside him against Yang Jian and the Howling Celestial Dog 233 245.
• Yang Jian — recurring battlefield opponent who severely injures Nezha 233 245 249.
