While recovering and rebuilding his business, Duan Mu investigated Kosuke’s abduction and later accepted a Golden Seal Society commission to find three missing visitors in the Human World. He rescued them from Ginjo Kugo and Tsukishima, returned to Soul Society to recover, and then resumed managing the Yorozuya.

• Duan Mu rebuilt the 11th Division barracks and helped search for Emiri’s missing son, Kosuke, whose unusual spiritual presence vanished after he was rescued.
• Duan Mu fought a masked attacker with Ikkaku and Renji until Soi Fon arrived, and the attacker escaped while the Punishment Force found Kosuke in a cave.
• After recovering and joining the Women's Association as an honorary member, Duan Mu trained with Kūkaku and received Yoruichi’s scroll of Shunpo techniques.
• Duan Mu accepted a Golden Seal Society commission to find Hachi Haneha, Ukitake Hiroshi, and Nagano Kahide in the Human World, and Urahara provided him with clothing suited to his fused soul and body.
• Duan Mu found the fugitives after Ginjo Kugo and Tsukishima attacked them, then fought the two assailants while Hachi called Soul Society for help.
• Duan Mu’s restriction lifted during the battle, and he used powerful Kidō before escaping with reinforcements nearing, then collapsed and was taken back to Soul Society.
• After recovering, Duan Mu reported the fight to Soi Fon, accepted Hachi’s thanks, returned to Rukongai, and offered Man'ya Ori a job at the Yorozuya on condition that he keep commissions confidential.

Duan Mu entered Hueco Mundo to rescue the Fujiwara siblings, fought powerful Arrancar, and survived with Tier Harribel’s help before returning to Soul Society. Back in Seireitei, he pursued new work and uncovered Iwao’s impulsive attempt to reach Hueco Mundo with his stolen pass.

• Duan Mu accepted a commission to rescue Fujiwara Hisashi and Fujiwara Rei in Hueco Mundo, where he encountered Shiba Kaien and then fought Aaroniero and Nnoitra.
• After Nnoitra wounded him, Duan Mu hid beneath a Gillian, and Tier Harribel found him and helped him recover while he studied her Hollow powers.
• Duan Mu developed an advanced Hollow Crest for Tier, then escaped Hueco Mundo and reported the Arrancar threat to Yamamoto and the captains.
• Duan Mu returned to his duties, trained his reiatsu, and later killed Grand Fisher after it attacked Kurosaki Masaki and young Ichigo.
• Duan Mu met Ukitake Jushiro through Omaeda and learned that Amanen Nayula had observed him on her own initiative.
• Urahara Kisuke gave Duan Mu a token to the Shiba Clan’s secret archive, and Duan Mu later discovered that his Pass Token had been stolen.
• Duan Mu learned that Iwao had taken the token to reach Hueco Mundo and confront the Hollow impersonating Kaien, then beat Iwao after rebuking him.

Duan Mu tried to strengthen himself, protect Ishida Sōgen, and investigate Central 46 while Aizen’s schemes and Rukia’s assignment unfolded. He invaded Central 46 with Amanen Nayula, but Tōsen wounded him before Nayula presented a document placing his judgment in the hands of the Golden Seal Noble Assembly.

• Duan Mu took Iwao to Hueco Mundo, met Tier and the Pikaro, and killed Aaroniero before fighting Nnoitra and other Espada in a Shikai domain.
• After escaping Hueco Mundo, Duan Mu was questioned by Central 46, returned to his duties, and agreed to teach the Fifth Division while cautiously observing Aizen and Kyoka Suigetsu.
• Duan Mu protected Ishida Sōgen from the 12th Division and Kurotsuchi Mayuri, then negotiated with Central 46 to keep the Quincy under his watch.
• Duan Mu trained to compress his spiritual pressure, developed the Spiritual Void Crest, and later resumed monitoring Rukia’s assignment in Karakura Town.
• Nayula asked Duan Mu to investigate why Central 46’s Sages and judges had shut themselves away and kept her from her father, and Duan Mu accepted her commission.
• Duan Mu declared himself a ryoka, destroyed his Command Divine Machine, and carried Nayula toward Central 46, fighting Komamura Sajin and other Shinigami along the way.
• Duan Mu restrained Tōsen Kaname and opened Central 46’s gates, but Tōsen stabbed him before he could open the final gate.
• Yamamoto arrived as Nayula presented a document stating that only the Golden Seal Noble Assembly could judge Duan Mu.

Duan Mu was assigned to the 9th Division as an acting captain while Ichigo and the other ryoka invaded Seireitei to rescue Rukia. When Aizen revealed his betrayal and took the Hogyoku, Duan Mu joined the fight and battled him at Sōkyoku Hill.

• Central 46 blacklisted Duan Mu and moved Rukia’s execution up to seven days away, while he suspected Tōsen Kaname had survived.
• Yamamoto assigned Duan Mu to perform the duties of the 9th Division captain, and Duan Mu took charge of its staff and unfinished work.
• Ichigo and the other ryoka entered Seireitei, and Duan Mu confronted and captured Sado when he crossed the 9th Division’s territory.
• Duan Mu learned that the ryoka were heading toward Sōkyoku Hill, but Yamamoto ordered him to remain in his district until the intruders were captured.
• Aizen revealed himself at Sōkyoku Hill, cut down Iwao, pierced Rukia, and removed the Hogyoku as Tōsen trapped Duan Mu in Enma Korogi.
• Duan Mu defeated Tōsen in his domain, sensed the danger at Sōkyoku Hill, and rushed back as Aizen gravely wounded Ichigo and fought Yoruichi and Soi Fon.
• Duan Mu surprised Aizen with a disguised kick, then joined the battle and used Flash Cry with Yoruichi’s technique to blast apart the battlefield.
• Duan Mu kept attacking Aizen by spending experience points to heal his wounds, but Aizen shattered his blade before Duan Mu restrained him with Kidō and landed a punch.
