That night, the mortal nobles in the convoy gathered firewood and built a massive bonfire in the wilderness. Under the direction of Witch Sophia and Witch Gabriel, they set up a simple camp around it.

The entire night was murky and dim. There was no moonlight or starlight, and the land lay in darkness apart from the bonfire at the heart of their camp.

Early the next morning, the carriage convoy set out again.

After traveling all day, they finally crossed the wilderness and reached a city-state before dusk.

Most of the buildings in this city-state were made of stone. It seemed to be the largest human settlement in the area.

The human political structures in Black Wizard territory weren't nations, but one city-state after another.

Behind each of those city-states stood a wizard faction within the Blood Curse Court. The city-states existed to gather unprocessed magical resources for those factions.

Witch Sophia seemed to have influence within this city-state, so she easily passed through the entrance in the walls of the city-state known as Corinth.

The Corinth slave soldiers guarding the walls all performed a salute with their fists over their chests toward Witch Sophia, seemingly expressing their collective respect.

Walking beside Witch Sophia, Locke was somewhat surprised. He hadn't expected Sophia to wield such influence in the heart of enemy territory.

Locke lowered his voice. "Teacher, how did you do it? Their attitude toward you is like they're welcoming their master home."

Witch Sophia's lips curved slightly. "You'll know why soon enough."

Before long, the lord of the Corinth slave city-state ordered slave soldiers to invite them into the fortress in Corinth's core district.
