Long Island, New York.

At the largest funeral home in town.

Ted sat on the floor in a daze.

On the morgue table before him lay a body covered mostly by a white sheet, leaving only a pale face exposed. On the left side of her forehead was a freshly stitched two-inch wound.

A tall middle-aged man who had been standing silently nearby had a flicker in his eyes. His expressionless face immediately turned warm and amiable as he looked at Lily. "Dr. Adam Duncan?"

"Yes."

Wiping away her tears, Lily looked at the middle-aged man. "You know Adam?"

"Yes."

The tall middle-aged man nodded. "We've met a few times."

"Oh, right."

Lily wiped her tears. "Adam mentioned it before. Monica's family lives here, and her Grandma's funeral must have been held here too."
