First experiences weren't always pleasant.
If it had been Cristina, or Meredith, who didn't like Lexie, then under the same circumstances, the same instruction delivered with a different tone and expression might have been too much for Lexie to handle.
Fortunately, Adam was patient enough.
But after Lexie accepted Adam's explanation and tearfully pronounced the time of death for the first time,
Adam still had her go rest and compose herself for a while.
Far fewer people came in for treatment during the latter half of the night.
But Adam remained, leading them as they took on case after case.
The twenty-fourth hour of their first shift.
A new day had begun.
Still full of energy, Adam led the four exhausted residents on rounds.
After resting for a few hours, Lexie had barely managed to suppress the discomfort of her first experience and rejoined the team.
It wasn't as if she didn't understand the reasoning.
Since she had chosen to become a doctor and intended to reach the pinnacle of medicine, it would be ridiculous if she couldn't even take the first step.
It wasn't as though she had never seen a dead person before.
And strictly speaking, this patient hadn't died in her hands.
Adam had merely created a simulated environment for her. The impact it had on her was naturally far less than if someone had truly died in her care.
So she recovered quickly afterward.
But the valuable experience of emergency resuscitation when a life hung in the balance was very real.
Not just anyone got the chance to have this kind of simulated experience.
Adam was completely serious when he told Lexie that this was an opportunity for her.
