Ch. 1The Dying Man

Shade awoke in a nineteenth-century bedroom in a body whose name was also Shade, and discovered that a mysterious voice had given him knowledge of the local language. The dying Sparrow Hamilton revealed that Shade would inherit his Detective Agency and property if he kept the agency open and burned a letter arriving on September 5, 1853.

  • Shade regained consciousness in an unfamiliar bedroom beside a frail, dying man and realized he had transmigrated into another world.
  • A mysterious woman’s voice told Shade to inherit everything from the unfamiliar body, then forcibly gave him knowledge of the Delarion Kingdom Language.
  • Shade awkwardly answered Sparrow Hamilton, who explained that he had chosen Shade from among vagrants and given him a new name and basic education.
  • Sparrow Hamilton offered Shade his Detective Agency and property on the condition that he keep the agency open and retrieve and burn a letter arriving on September 5, 1853.
  • Sparrow Hamilton identified himself as Shade Hamilton and made the inheritance condition explicit.

Ch. 2The Detective's Last Words

Shade learned that Mr. Sparrow Hamilton had died because of a supernatural relic, then questioned him about the danger, his own future, and the mysterious world around them. Hamilton left Shade instructions to keep the Detective Agency running for three months, protect a valuable Rhodes Card, and leave Tobesk City afterward.

  • Shade suspected that Hamilton's death and the request he had made were tied to something dangerous, but agreed to carry out the task to avoid returning to life as a vagrant.
  • A voice in Shade's head told him that Hamilton had died because of a relic and that the death had nothing to do with him.
  • Hamilton warned Shade about Ring Arcanists, the Four Elements, the Orthodox Churches, and the Arcane Academies, then told him to remain in the house for three months and handle simple commissions.
  • Hamilton showed Shade a rare Rhodes Card, told him to protect it, and said the Birmingham Collection in Tobesk City could recognize its value if Shade had no other way out.
  • Hamilton apologized for involving Shade, explained that he had arranged a burial plot, and urged him to leave Tobesk City after three months.

Ch. 3Funeral

After Detective Sparrow Hamilton died, Shade dealt with the corpse bearers and took over the detective’s home. He accepted the voice’s cryptic direction to gather the Four Elements and resolved to survive in this world while exploring its supernatural mysteries.

  • Black light swept across Sparrow Hamilton’s corpse, and the body filled out as Shade learned he had come into contact with Whisper.
  • Shade opened the door to the corpse bearers, who confirmed the detective’s death and gave him a transfer document to sign.
  • The voice told Shade that Silver Moon was his Destiny, so he signed the document as Shade Suellen Hamilton.
  • The corpse bearers carried Sparrow Hamilton away, and Shade watched them take the coffin into the fog.
  • Shade searched the empty house, realized it was now his, and resolved to settle into his new life and investigate the extraordinary.

Ch. 4The Detective's Commission

Shade searched Detective Sparrow Hamilton’s apartment for money and found only one banknote, so he reviewed the detective’s records and chose a simple surveillance commission to earn his first payment. After discovering the apartment’s central location and wondering whether it was rented, he remained unsure whether to stay or flee.

  • Shade examined his reflection, tried to contact the whispering voice, and searched the apartment for money, finding only one banknote.
  • Shade reviewed Sparrow Hamilton’s records and chose to follow Mr. Lawrence’s mistress, Lassoya, to collect the remaining commission payment.
  • Shade used the detective’s notes and a city map to locate the apartment at Number 6, Saint Derain Square, near Yodel Palace in Tobesk City.
  • Shade realized the apartment might be rented and worried that rent or unknown debts could force him to leave.

Ch. 5True World

Shade prepared to leave the building and earn enough money to survive, then stepped into Tobesk City for the first time and struggled to accept that he had entered another world. A mysterious voice calmed him and declared that he had obtained “Enlightenment,” and Shade set off across Ring Square with a plan to move forward.

  • Shade packed Hamilton's investigation report, map, compass, and pocket watch, chose clothes and a cane for protection, and placed hairs at two doors to check whether anyone entered.
  • Shade left the apartment building and saw the smoke-filled, crowded square and its unfamiliar people and carriages.
  • Shade panicked at the reality of his new world until the woman's voice declared that he had obtained “Enlightenment” and calmed him.
  • Shade considered the voice's connection to the world's occult system and resolved to earn money, investigate Hamilton, and learn about the Four Elements.
  • Shade walked toward the road leading out of Ring Square, telling himself to keep moving forward.

Ch. 6Correspondence Education

Shade observed the Nightingale Club in Tobesk City and recorded Lassoya’s arrival for Detective Hamilton’s investigation. A voice in his mind drew his attention to Lassoya’s unusual ring, and Shade met Doctor Bill Schneider, who mentioned correspondence education and schizophrenia before heading to the newspaper office.

  • Shade learned about Tobesk City, the currency system, and the peaceful rivalry between Dellaireon Kingdom and the Kassenric United Kingdom as he walked to the Nightingale Club.
  • Shade waited outside the Töbesk City Evening News and recorded Lassoya’s arrival at the club at 1:23.
  • A voice in Shade’s mind told him to observe Lassoya’s ring, which appeared to hold a small pebble instead of a jewel.
  • Bill Schneider asked Shade for the time, exchanged business cards with him, and mentioned that his psychological clinic treated schizophrenia.
  • Schneider asked whether Shade had considered correspondence adult education, then went to meet the newspaper’s editor-in-chief.

Ch. 7Gods and Churches

While waiting outside The Club to report on Lassoya, Shade learned about the five recognized gods and discovered he could get free relief food from the Church of War and Peace. He also spotted his employer’s husband, Mr. Lawrence, entering The Club alone, giving him a possible extra detail for his report.

  • Shade accepted a flyer from a missionary of the Church of War and Peace and learned about the five Orthodox Churches and their gods.
  • Shade sensed the Miracle element and heard the voice in his mind tell him he had sensed it.
  • Shade found that the flyer promised free relief food at the Church of War and Peace’s cathedral and memorized the address.
  • Shade waited outside The Club and watched the fog thicken as he studied the passing people and carriages.
  • Shade saw Mr. Lawrence arrive and enter The Club alone, then recorded his clothing and the time in his notebook.

Ch. 8Rhodes Cards

Shade waited outside The Club, learned Rhodes Cards from three tavern regulars, and wondered whether a rare card in his diary was genuine. When the voice in his head told him to observe a ring, he spotted a man wearing Lassoya’s distinctive Pebble Ring and had to choose between following him and heading to the Church of War and Peace for relief food.

  • Shade entered the Screaming Hound, declined a glass of Rye Wine, and learned Rhodes Cards from three men who were gambling there.
  • Shade heard that rare cards could be worth a fortune and wondered whether the Sun 3 in his diary was authentic.
  • Shade returned to wait near The Club and planned to visit the Church of War and Peace for relief food if Lassoya did not appear.
  • The voice in Shade’s head told him to observe a ring, and Shade saw a young man leaving The Club with a Pebble Ring like Lassoya’s.
  • Shade considered following the ring-wearing man but checked his map and realized the cathedral was nearby and it was almost five o’clock.

Ch. 9Suspected Supernatural

Shade lost the man he had been following, then stumbled upon a supernatural fight inside a silverware shop and saw the ring-wearing stranger again. After the voice in his mind urged him toward the man, Shade chose to follow him into an alley.

  • Shade lost his target in an alley and used a map to find his way back to the street.
  • Shade reached a crowded intersection where police had gathered outside a silverware shop and saw a Priest among three men being escorted inside.
  • An explosion shattered the shop windows, and Shade glimpsed two people fighting amid white fog, one with light shining from his fist.
  • Shade left the crowd and spotted the young man with the Pebble Ring and suitcase, while the voice in his mind told him to observe the ring.
  • The young man entered an alley, and Shade followed after the voice described a path toward the supernatural.

Ch. 10Confused Man and Woman

Shade discovered that Lassoya could transform into a man through the Pebble Ring, then pawned his cane to secure money for food and shelter. He resolved to seek out the supernatural through a psychiatrist, a church, or Lassoya, but his plans were disrupted the next morning.

  • Shade watched Lassoya use the Pebble Ring to transform from a young man into a woman, then hid until she left.
  • Shade abandoned his investigation of Mr. Lawrence's mistress and pawned his cane to Old John Jones for two pounds.
  • Shade returned home, considered three ways to learn about the supernatural, and decided to investigate further before choosing one.
  • Shade fell asleep beneath the Silver Moon, comforted by the woman's laughter in his mind.
  • The next morning, an accident disrupted Shade's plan to choose among the psychiatrist, the churches, and Lassoya.

Ch. 11Saint Byrens Comprehensive College

Doctor Schneider visited Shade Hamilton and explained that the voice in Shade’s head signaled a rare Ring Arcanist talent that would disappear unless properly guided. He introduced Saint Byrens Comprehensive College as a place for adult correspondence students, leaving Shade to consider a dangerous new path.

  • Shade woke early, found no newspaper, and answered the apartment door when Doctor Schneider arrived with an admissions brochure.
  • Doctor Schneider entered Shade’s apartment, and they sat down to talk over black tea.
  • Doctor Schneider asked whether Shade heard another voice in his head, and Shade confirmed that the voice had appeared within the past twenty-four hours.
  • Doctor Schneider explained that the voice was an early sign of Ring Arcanist talent and that the awakening period lasted no more than seventy-two hours.
  • Doctor Schneider told Shade that Saint Byrens Comprehensive College and other groups recruited talented people before their awakening passed.

Ch. 12Admission

Doctor Schneider explained that Shade could become a Ring Arcanist through the Academy and urged him to learn more before choosing the Church. He then took Shade to confront the person responsible for Sparrow Hamilton’s death, leaving them approaching the suspect’s location.

  • Doctor Schneider explained the differences between the Orthodox Church and the Academy, and warned Shade that an unguided talent awakening could lead to madness or death.
  • Doctor Schneider revealed that Shade’s awakening had changed him and said he had investigated Shade’s identity, but Shade agreed to learn about the Academy before deciding whether to join the Church.
  • Doctor Schneider offered to help Shade find Sparrow Hamilton’s killer, explaining that the suspect was an ordinary person who had obtained a relic rather than a Ring Arcanist.
  • Doctor Schneider and Shade traveled by carriage to the Oser River, then continued on foot through the grass toward the suspect.

Ch. 13Ring Arcanists and Destiny Rings

Shade accompanied Doctor Schneider to an abandoned sanatorium, where the Doctor demonstrated his Destiny Ring and explained the basics of Ring Arcanists. As the Doctor began to introduce the four elements, he spotted the person they had come to find.

  • Bill Schneider explained that the sanatorium had been abandoned after Tobesk City moved its hospitals closer to the city.
  • Doctor Schneider summoned his complete brass Destiny Ring from scalding steam and explained how the era shaped its appearance.
  • Shade learned that a Ring Arcanist advanced by accumulating spirit and engraving Spirit Runes associated with the four great elements.
  • Doctor Schneider explained how Destiny Rings reflected an Arcanist’s rank and described spirit, Spirit Runes, and the dangers of studying ancient knowledge.
  • Doctor Schneider paused while leading Shade through the sanatorium and said the person they were looking for should be nearby.

Ch. 14Four Elements

The Doctor explained the Miracle, Blasphemy, Enlightenment, and Whisper Elements to Shade as they followed a trail to a hidden room in the sanatorium. They found Baird Morode asleep beside a relic, and the Doctor explained how the relic had driven him to become a murderer.

  • The Doctor described how Miracle Spirit Runes came from stories and traces of gods, and showed Shade his golden Dust rune.
  • The Doctor explained Blasphemy and warned Shade about the danger of evil gods, then used his Emotion rune to sense a frightened person nearby.
  • The Doctor described Enlightenment and used his Sweet Dream thaumaturgy as they searched the second floor.
  • The Doctor revealed a blood-soaked room with his False Reality rune, exposing Baird Morode sleeping among human organs with a pistol and brass box.
  • The Doctor identified Baird Morode as a student driven mad by a relic and explained that relics came from the first five epochs and could carry the Whisper Element.

Ch. 15Relic Levels

Shade and Doctor Schneider identified the relic that killed Detective Sparrow Hamilton and dealt with the people responsible for the sanatorium killings. Back at Schneider’s clinic, Shade remained grateful but still wondered what secret identity Sparrow had concealed.

  • Doctor Schneider explained the five relic levels and identified the Life Countdown Pocket Watch as a Poet Level relic that had killed Sparrow Hamilton.
  • Schneider retrieved the pocket watch from the blood-filled box, and Shade read the runic inscription and felt its disturbing effects.
  • Schneider and Shade searched the sanatorium, dispelled the relic’s illusions, and confirmed the location of the bodies; Schneider killed Baird Morode after Shade refused to do so.
  • Schneider revealed that he had sent an anonymous letter to the Tobesk City Police Department and left the area with Shade before the authorities arrived.
  • Schneider and Shade returned to Tobesk, ate at the Goose Restaurant, and went to Schneider’s psychological clinic.
  • Shade thanked Schneider for his help but kept his suspicions about Sparrow’s hidden identity to himself.

Ch. 16Correspondence Education Enrollment Invitation

Doctor Schneider explained Saint Byrens Comprehensive College’s Correspondence Education system and the restrictions faced by outsiders who join the Church or an Academy. Shade remained interested but asked for time to verify the doctor’s claims, and they agreed to meet again at two in the afternoon.

  • Doctor Schneider described how Correspondence Ring Arcanists trained in groups and needed to meet specific requirements before entering an Academy.
  • Doctor Schneider explained that outsiders faced heightened risks of losing control, and that he would erase Shade’s memories if Shade refused to join Saint Byrens Comprehensive College.
  • Shade compared the Academy’s relative freedom with the Church’s restrictions and asked how Doctor Schneider could prove his claims.
  • Doctor Schneider offered to let Shade contact the Poet Level relic Dream, warning that the Academy would record Shade’s identity.
  • Shade requested an hour to consider the offer and stayed to read Academy enrollment materials while Doctor Schneider went to handle other matters.

Ch. 17Professional Classifications at Steam Epoch Institutions of Higher Learning

Shade weighed Doctor Schneider’s offer to join Saint Byrens Comprehensive College and decided to examine the relic before making a choice. After a brief encounter with a blonde Ring Arcanist and a review of the college’s programs, he learned more about its training system and discovered that he could understand writing in an unfamiliar language.

  • Shade considered whether Doctor Schneider was trustworthy and decided to review the relic’s information before choosing a college.
  • A blonde woman entered the reception room, recognized Shade as a Gifted, and advised him not to choose Chemistry College if he enrolled at Saint Byrens.
  • Shade read the admissions materials and learned about the college’s ten specialized colleges, their fields, and the Core Rune’s role in recommending a student’s specialization.
  • Shade realized the doctor’s explanation of Ring Arcanists had left out important details, including that a Core Rune was engraved in the center of the Wheel of Fate.
  • Shade returned the papers to the document bag and discovered that he could understand writing in a language he had never learned.

Ch. 18Falsified Philosopher's Stone

Shade read an Academy bounty notice about the Falsified Philosopher's Stone and waited for Doctor Schneider to return. He agreed to contact Saint Byrens Comprehensive College’s Dream, and Doctor showed him the relic in its containment box.

  • Shade read the Academy bounty notice warning students about the Blood of Mercury and the Falsified Philosopher's Stone, and wondered what would happen if the Orthodox Church discovered his identity.
  • Shade waited at Doctor Schneider’s home, accepted pastries from Mrs. Carla, and examined the unfamiliar steam-era furnishings.
  • Doctor Schneider returned late and apologized for a problem collecting medicines intended for his thaumaturgical research.
  • Shade told Doctor Schneider he wanted to contact the Poet Level relic Saint Byrens Comprehensive College’s Dream.
  • Doctor Schneider explained the history of the Academies and the epochs, then opened a black box containing a sunflower-painted cloisonné enamel snuff bottle.

Ch. 19The Woman Writer and Tuition Fees

Shade used the Poet Level Relic Whisper to see Saint Byrens Comprehensive College in a dream, then agreed to join the Academy as a correspondence Ring Arcanist. Doctor Schneider introduced him to Dorothy Louisa and began explaining the tuition fees required for enrollment.

  • Doctor Schneider opened Whisper, and Shade dreamed of the Academy beyond the Great Ice Cap of the Far North.
  • Shade woke convinced that Saint Byrens Comprehensive College existed and accepted Doctor Schneider's invitation to join as a correspondence Ring Arcanist.
  • Doctor Schneider told Shade that Dorothy Louisa would help preside over his enrollment ceremony and introduced her as a novelist and journalist.
  • Dorothy Louisa entered, greeted Shade, and joined Doctor Schneider in confirming that their group now had five Ring Arcanists.
  • Doctor Schneider presented the Academy's fee schedule after telling Shade that tuition fees were the final matter before formal enrollment.

Ch. 20Founding Silver Moon

Shade learned that his Ring Arcanist tuition cost 50 pounds and accepted Doctor Schneider’s offer of an interest-free loan. He also discovered that the Detective’s Rhodes Cards card might be a rare Founding Series Silver Moon, and planned to have it appraised.

  • Shade worried that he could not afford the Academy’s 50-pound tuition, and Doctor Schneider offered him an interest-free loan guaranteed within the group.
  • Shade showed Doctor Schneider and Miss Louisa the Rhodes Cards card he had found in the Detective’s belongings.
  • Doctor Schneider identified the card as a possible Founding Series Silver Moon, but judged it almost certainly a replica because genuine copies were extraordinarily rare and valuable.
  • Doctor Schneider explained that the Seer Association could appraise the card for 5 pence, and Shade became interested in having it checked.
