After getting used to his body a little, the weakened Shade lay in Miss Belinder's arms, wanting to shake himself dry like Little Mia did. But he discovered that he was completely limp and weak, and even though they were both cats, he had not mastered Little Mia's technique. Fortunately, Miss Belinder saw what he intended and placed a hand on him, steaming his fur dry.
"What happened? Can't you change back?"
Ignoring her own condition, she still lowered her head to worry about the cat in her arms. The tiny silver cat lay there pitifully, and even when she reached out to stroke him, Shade Cat had no strength to object.
"Is this the price of using that power just now?"

"How are you? Just now, you should have returned to shore earlier."
